Essay

For every action, there is a reaction, or for that matter, ethically it can be said that there are consequences. The world gets governed naturally by laws which are to be followed by man. John and Jane decided not to have a child until they are both ready, but eventually Jane accidentally becomes pregnant and several factors such as natural law, Consequentialism and  deontological issues determine how she will act or react after the news of her pregnancy. Deontological ethics judges the morality of an action. Consequentialism is a group of ethical theories that are considered normative.

The natural law theory is of two types. This can either be an atheist or theist. Jane has a duty as a pregnant individual to bring the pregnancy to terms. The pregnancy might have interfered with both her husband’s and her career plans although terminating it based on this would not be morally right. This is because the careers could still be achieved after the birth of the child. Based on natural laws, the fetus has a moral right of existence and development. John has a right to know about Jane’s condition. Additionally, it is extremely necessary that they come to a rational conclusion that not only favors their own personal interest. Human beings are social creatures; therefore, Jane could be jeopardizing her social relationship with John if she chooses not to consider his moral wishes in the matter.

There may be a moral difference if it is determined that the fetus has a genetic disease or defect. Such a situation affects the health or wellness of the mother by exposing her to circumstances which can be life threatening. For example, it is morally okay to terminate a pregnancy which involves the development of the fetus in the fallopian tube. This is condition is referred to as ectopic pregnancy. When the pregnancy posses a life threat to the mother, then it is okay to terminate it, in order to cater for the wellness of the mother.
