Essay

Because it is not known what comprehension strategies readers use while reading an alternative genre text, you are asked to write a one-page, typed reflection on the comprehension strategies that you used while reading the alternative genre text. Include the following:

  • Describe the strategies used

While reading, or interpreting, “All The Wrong People Have Self Esteem: An Inappropriate Book for Young Ladies” by Laurie Rosenwald, I was forced to approach the work from an open-minded perspective.  One strategy I used was to read the book backwards and forwards, another was to selectively identify my favorite pages and passages. As the text read more like an adult children’s book than an actual novel, it was very easy to familiarize myself with the most recognizable, and memorable content.

  • Reflect on why you chose the strategies you used

I originally chose these strategies, because they made it easier for me to grasp all of the information in an efficient manner. I also like these strategies because they allow for the reader to appreciate the work on multiple levels, creatively as well as the way it was intended.

  • Talk about how the strategies helped you

Strategies helped by making the information more comprehensible, but even by making the original document more entertaining. Many of the pictures and jokes Rosenwald uses are proceeded by alternative material sometimes of different taste and sometime of similar tone and context.  This sets the book up in a way where it can be understood on multiple levels.

  • Discuss how you could teach students to use these strategies with alternative genre texts

The main way to teach students to use these strategies is to instruct them to read freely. Works like these teach unconventional reading structure. They allow students to read from begging to end traditionally, or to read backwards or to skip around. Likewise, students can enhance their comprehension skills by approaching material from a more diverse perspective.
