America at Odds, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 253

Essay

The Electoral College system, while well-intended has out-grown its usefulness. Even though the Electoral College vote has diverged from the popular vote only three times in American history, the current system raises questions by many about the fairness of the system. If Presidents were elected by popular vote, the concept of every voting counting would be more valid then the current system. America should do away with the Electoral College system.

Rest of the World

A large percentage of Americans do not make the effort to vote. The compulsory voting laws in other countries insure a larger turn-out and perhaps a greater representation of the people’s will. Much time and money is spent in America on getting the vote out. This time and money could be spent focusing on the issues and more debates between candidates. Since the party that is successful in getting their supporters to the polls, the true position of citizens may not be represented. America should institute compulsory voting.

Perception vs. Reality

The perception of a mandate by those winning elections can lead to the winner cause him or her to believe they can proceed with programs or ideas professed in speeches that are not necessarily accepted by the majority of the people. Perhaps the enactment of compulsory voting would go a long way in clarifying why the candidate was elected and further define their mandate. The voter’s confidence would be higher. Proposed programs would have more focus and debate and time to develop before the election. The reality might overtake the perception.
