America Is Not Free in China, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 575

Essay

Chinese-American relations continue to be very tense amidst recent allegations that United States companies are not welcome in China.  The Chinese commerce minister Chen Deming recently spoke out against the U.S. Treasury Department and claims that China was a currency manipulator and deserves trade sanctions on its exports.

This continues to emphasize the major issue that the United States believes that it can say and do anything it wishes in an international marketplace and it is acceptable.  Actually, we are finding that contrary to popular belief, the United States is not the big dog on the block anymore.

As the recession continues, then subsides, and then comes back again, the United States dollar is of a very low international value.  To assist with the struggling dollar, politicians in Washington D.C. have been working hard to pressure China to bring its currency to the same level as the dollar, which will lower the trade surplus and increase the costs of China’s exports around the globe.  Yet, we wonder why China is not jumping at the opportunity.

As these tensions continue to build in Washington and Beijing, it appears from a recent survey that the American companies in China are quickly becoming the victims.  The American Chamber of Commerce in China (Amcham) released survey results that suggested that United States companies do not feel welcome to do business in China.  The number of companies feeling unwelcome has increased from 26% to 38% in the recent annual survey for 2009.

Finally, the federal government understands where the normal American has been over the last several years.  Imagine a situation where an American citizen wants to go to the bank to receive a loan.  He provides all the appropriate paperwork and plays by the rules only to find out that the bank has flat out turned him down.  The American government is begging for assistance from China in helping with the currency, and the bank of China is not buying.

What does every other normal American citizen do when they are denied something they want?  Whine and complain to anyone that will listen – or they could always try stealing it.  This is the American way.  Now that the Chinese market, Chinese government and Chinese businesses are catching on, they are treating us like the five-year-old crying to mommy and telling us to go sit in the corner.

Too often we expect that the “Land of the Free” provides us with the same freedoms in foreign markets as they do here at home.  This is clearly not the case.  But who can blame the Chinese?  If you were dealing with something that wanted to do business with you but continually badmouthed you and complained about your business habits, eventually you would say enough is enough.

We should applaud the Chinese for putting their foot down and making the statement that America is not free in China.  The rules are not the same in the international market as they are in the United States and the U.S. government and businesses cannot continue to try to intimidate, bully and belittle their way to success in foreign countries.  Yes, we are not welcome in China – and we only have our own actions to blame.

While President Obama continues to pitch the health bill that is meant to save this country, the American companies are being eaten apart by foreign companies.  There is no diplomacy anymore, only Darwinism at its finest – and if we don’t like it, get out!
