American History: The New Deal, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Essay

Would you consider the programs of FDR’s New Deal a success?

The Great Depression was an economically devastating event for America in the 1920s, which left the country in a bankrupt status. Even wealthy people were destitute with bank closures and the stock market crashed. Many people were left unemployed and many lost their homes, as well as their livelihoods.

FDR’s initiate to implement the New Deal was an effort to revitalize America and get the economy back to a healthy status. I do consider FDR’s New Deal program a success, even though it is likely that not every single person affected by the Great Depression benefited from it. The New Deal did result in getting unemployed people back to work and bailing out businesses, as well as getting banks back open again.

FDR’s New Deal was a success, in large part, due to him passing critical laws through Congress during his first three months in office. These included declaring a bank holiday and enacting the Emergency Banking Relief Act, to give them time to become more stabilized. The New Deal also included preventing foreclosures through refinancing by the Home Owner’s Loan Corporation and the Farm Credit Administration. In addition, FDR was diligent on keeping the American public informed with constant communication and public announcements, which aided in the success of the New Deal.

Some would argue that FDR’s New Deal was not successful, due to the push back he received from the Republican party and the Supreme Court. However, even with this setback, his policies did much to counteract the effects of the Great Depression.
