Essay

The Research Project to study inmate satisfaction levels within your prison system has been completed within the timeline agreed, and the results we believe, will go a long way in enhancing the future developmental plans of the institution.

The underpinning variables provided, namely gender distribution, facility types, category of offences, lengths of service, incarceration services, legal services and satisfaction with the criminal justice system, prove quite appropriate in terms of the high levels of participation and cooperation obtained from inmates within the institution, as well as the correctional officers.

Participants seemed highly motivated that they were considered worthy of being involved in a project of this nature, and went overboard to express their feelings on all issues questioned.

We found that the institution highly male dominated, with 80% overall occupation, and is a factor worth considering when the future purpose of the entity comes under discussion. This is because the level of female within the system and the economic cost associated, may lead to continuous high overheads, which reduces profitability and efficiency levels, especially from a female staffing deployment perspective, and other specialized resources that has to be dispensed during an entire year.

This argument is supported by the fact that 11% of the women were found by our analysis, to be doing less than two years in prison for committing 25% of the homicides, 22% of the burglaries and 10 % of all robberies in the country.

The Criminal Justice System, we believe deserves congratulations for the excellent service that it has been delivering, as measured by our research team. The sample mean for sentence satisfactionwere found to be 4.8 and 4.99 for females and males respectively. The result should serve as a vital building block for future strategic development of the institution, in that your staff can examine what now prevails and the results that has been achieved, and make modifications to achieve even greater performances.

An ideal test for this performance was our probe of the probability that an individual will be in a state facility and obtained legal satisfaction above the level of 5. We were impressed with the 82% probability results that resulted. This outcome confirms the level of competence that is operational in the state system concerning the way inmates are being serviced.

Incarceration Services, at your institution by our expert determination, could be improved, as we found 68% of all inmates expressing satisfaction that lies in the 5-7 range. Further investigations on a national level seems appropriate, to see what corrective measures can be implemented, so that the satisfaction level can approach the 80% to 90% level, of which it seems capable, based on the levels of professionalism we saw among the correctional staff and management.

We also found sentence satisfaction to be less than ideal, in that it attained a low 32 % probability, and suggest that despite excellent performance in other areas, some level of injustices may be operational in the institution and should be examined, especially in the types of punishments being handed down for the crimes committed.

A major concern among the team at the end of the project is the smallness of the sample size for the female population, the propensity for them to provide answers that are representative of the group true feelings, and whether we should use them as basis for future recommendations.

We are confident however, of the quality of responses received from the male component of the sample, and can guarantee the reliability of the information for whatever purpose it will be used for going forward, because of the size and directional position of the skew observed.

In support of our research exercise we will provide tables that showed our methodology and approach, as well as specific answers that were requested at the beginning.

Results

  • The gender distribution in the prisons were 1/5 and 4/5 for females and males respectively
  • The length of service in terms of gender revealed that 1/9 of all women in the facility were serving less than two years, compared to 8/9 probability for men
  • In the 2-5 year category 1 in every seven individuals was female and 6 out of every 7 were males.
  • We found 75 % of persons in prisons for more than five years were  males and 25% females
  • Our research found 25 % of females in the institution had been engaged in homicides, 10% in robbery and 29 % in burglary
  • In comparison the men statistics were 75 %, 90% and 71% respectively
  • We calculated the total value of the scores for each gender and divided them by  number of participants, to determine the mean for sentence satisfaction for genders and found them to be 4.8 and 4.99 for females  and males respectively
  • The probability of an individual to be in the 16-21 age range and in prison were found to be 9/25, because our analysis revealed that that there were 9 persons within that age group from a sample size of 25
  • The probability of individual satisfaction with the justice system  attaining 5.2 or lower, was determined by adding the probabilities from the lowest level to the given standard, and this was found to be 6/11  ( 1/22 +2/22 + 8/22 =6/11)
  • We found the probability of a female in the prison being found guilty of homicide to be 21/44 or 0.47 or 47%, by adding 5/22 ( probability of women in the sample) and ¼ (the probability for committing homicide)
  • Last but not least, the probability that an individual can be in a state facility and receive legal services satisfactions greater than 5 was found to be 82% by adding the probability for state (8/21) and 11/25 which was the probability for a score greater than 5.
