Research Paper

As an Advanced Practice Nurse Manager in the area of maternity, computer science is the foundational element that allows nurses and other healthcare professionals to effectively provide the best care and treatment for their patients. Certainly, computer science and computerization has significantly contributed to a reduction in medical errors and made it possible for a manager like myself to quickly access medical records via an EMR system and to consult of medicinal and prescriptive history of a patient which in the field of maternity can make all of the difference between life and death. Computer science has also made it possible to have a personal digital assistant (PDA) which provides immediate access to the Internet and allows the sending and receiving of data and information almost at the speed of light. As a tool, the PDA has increased my ability to provide a higher quality of patient care in a maternal setting (Predhomme, 2015).

Information science or nursing informatics, defined by the American Nurses Association as a “specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, (and) knowledge” (Nursing Informatics, 2012) serves as the infrastructure of computer science and computerization. Informatics go hand-in-hand with nursing science which from my perspective concerns the treatment and care of mothers and their unborn and newborn children. Thus, nursing informatics and nursing science provides me with the tools to locate and retrieve patient health histories; plan ahead for comprehensive physical exams and often development assessments; order important laboratory results and findings, along with diagnostics and interpretive aids; create therapeutic plans for mothers and their newborn children; examine hospital records for information on a patient’s family that will help to develop counseling approaches; and most importantly, to quickly access research studies that often provide information and data that can be utilized for a specific patient’s needs and requirements after being discharged from the hospital.
