Words: 312

Essay

Agriculture is essential to human life. It ensures the growth and success of the economy by securing one of the basic needs required by the labor force. There are some nations that are currently experiencing a food shortage due to insufficient investment in the agricultural sector. This plan will highlight the underlying principles that have to be followed in order to realize a food sufficient Somalia.

Water and Irrigation

Water is an integral part of agriculture and food production. Somalia is mainly arid and semi-arid, making sources of water scarce. In order to jumpstart agriculture, source of water have to be explored. Somalia has the potential of underground water deposits that could be harnessed through the digging of wells. These wells can then be used to feed an irrigation channel in the areas where the project will be launched. The irrigation scheme will be synchronized to only supply water when needed so as to ensure conservative use of the water.

Soil

Soil is also essential to the production of food. The soil profile determines the kid of agricultural crop can be grown. Somalia’s surface and soil profile is predominantly lacking the O Horizon (litter), the A Horizon (subsoil) and the C Horizon (transition zone). It is therefore recommended that the missing layers of soil be transported from other areas so as to create the ideal soil profile for sustainable food production.

Trees

It is important that the soil be able to retain the fertile top layer. This can be achieved through the planting of trees to act as a wind breaker. This will also further help to hold the soil firm to mitigate incidences of water soil erosion.

In conclusion, I would recommend the exploration of underground water sources and the implementation of an irrigation scheme. I would also recommend the introduction of rich top soil that will be preserved by the plantation of trees and other cover crop.
