Pages: 1

Words: 320

Essay

Grant proposals are an integral part of conducting health research.   Indeed, since a majority of health research is funded by some type of grant, the process of writing a compelling grant proposal is a prerequisite for long-term sustenance in the field.  This essay will focus on the following elements of grant writing: the process of creating the grant, the literature search and reviews, and all possible sources of financing.

One of the most important steps in the process is finding the right grant; that is, finding a grant that a researcher is eligible for and a compelling grant proposal for.  Most organizations, whether they are a governmental organization or a private organization, regularly release grant prospectuses that allows one to assess the eligibility and general direction of the grant.  These should be used as a rough outline to understand what the grant entails.

Once one decides to apply for a grant, the next most important goal is to produce a complete literature search and review of the issue.  Most grants address a certain issue in health research; that issue might range from being a pure “clinical” issue to issues that include both a clinical and health services research component. A literature reviews provides a current portrait of research on the subject, including areas of fertile research that need additional research , hence  the reason for the grant.  In addition to the literature review, time must also be spent to organize and schedule how the grant will be carried out.  Financing is a large aspect of this process.  A grant usually pays out over a period of time that must not only be accounted for in full, but must also be figured into the original application regarding the feasibility of meeting the requirements of the grant over the long-term.  That process will include a full budgetary plan and assembling researchers with the right credentials in order to convince the grantee of your competence.
