Detail explanation of how evidence-based practice in the care of patients in my practice area is implemented

My area of practice is not exclusive in the implementation process encompassing evidence- based practice transference. Importantly, there is a protocol guiding evidence-based practice implementation for all nursing care disciplines. A number of models for evidence-based practice exist within the profession and they vary with specific diseases such as heart failure, diabetes and hypertension. Most practice protocols contain an implementation guideline related to the specific disease/ condition/situation. These guidelines emerged from research conducted in the particular  area of interest for which the protocol exists (Savino, Smeland & Flink, 2011).

For example, the implementation protocols encompassing surgical infection prophylaxis entail promoting compliance; monitoring compliance, establishing surveillance, designing the implementation structure, testing, transferring evidence and evaluating outcomes. This can be used as a standard evidence-based implementation criteron for almost any nursing procedure after making distinct adjustments for the condition/situation (Savino et.al, 2011).

However, the actual evidence-based implementation process has steps. They encompass planning for sustainable change being the first step. For example, in implementing surgical prophylaxis the stakeholders after reviewing the protocol guidelines must develop an implementation plan involving persons that would be responsible for executing the change. This first stage is called the preparation phase of the surgical infection prophylaxis evidence –based I change.  Step two entails validating the evidence that would be used in the process. There is more than one evidence-based practice pertaining to surgical infection prophylaxis. The best one and most suitable for my clinical setting would be verified and validated (Houser & Oman, 2013).

The third phase is conducting a comparative evaluation of a number of evidence- based practices used for surgical infection prophylaxis in the operating room setting and making a decision pertaining to exactly what aspects of the model/practice can be effectively utilized. Fourthly, is translating/applying the evidence my clinical practice (operating room). Once this has been undertaken an evaluation of the process must be conducted. This is the fifth and final stage, but crucial to the process in determining how successful the evidence was transferred. The evaluation will assess costs and whether there has been any reduction in surgical infections from the operating room setting (Houser & Oman, 2013).

Provide an example of how earning your BSN will help you to practice nursing differently.

Now, at my level I engage in basic therapeutic communications with my patients/ clients. As a BSN I am required to use complex therapeutic communications instead. For example, if a client asks me to explain the purpose for his/her surgery as ADN I would say that it  would be best for the client to speak with their surgeon who will provide all the information. However, as a BSN I would be able to translate what the surgeon might have told the client into simple language and explain the process based on my new scope of practice (Hood, 2013).

How will the BSN enhance your practice?

My BSN scope of practice allows me to intervene with patient care at a much higher level than the basic yes/no phases. It requires that I go in-depth into executing interventions as well as communicating with clients.

How will you practice differently?

For example, at an ADN level when administering medications to a patient in the operating room I would tell him/her the name of the drug. If the patient refuses to take the medication I am equipped with knowledge and skills to explain reasons why it is important to take the medication. While not going against the patient’s wishes I can be a source of influence in providing the most appropriate care (Hood, 2013).
