An Uncomfortable Situation in the Workplace, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 276

Essay

The statement, in my opinion, is important as it calls for accountability of actions and events that occurred. The biggest problem when unethical conduct is experienced is the silence towards the issue. Keeping silent becomes a conspiracy to cover up the acts. As such, Pronovost’s statement aims at acknowledging the issues experienced and promising to uncover the truth rather than cover it up. Speaking about the leaders’ happenings would reveal acute misdeeds and unroot chronic and longstanding patterns of misconduct. Secondly, I view the statement as important as leaders would create an ethical culture that encourages employees to speak up about minor unethical conduct daily in the workplace. Talking about the issue as a leader demonstrates top management commitment to uncovering the misconducts that resulted in the two patients’ deaths. Employees’ behaviors in an organization are usually a reflection of what leaders in the organization place their commitment on. As such, the statement creates the impression that the leadership is committed to addressing the mis-happenings.

An uncomfortable situation in the workplace that was not addressed appropriately was an issue related to wrongful accusation. A coworker who was of a higher ranking in the organization blamed another one who was junior to them for a mistake that was not entirely their fault. To worsen the matters, the senior coworker did it in front of the entire company during a human resource meeting. The accused coworker responded by fighting back and attacking the coworker right then with words, and it ended up being a brawl. I was aware of the false accusations, but I did not speak up as I feared losing my job or being labeled a betrayer.
