Borrowed voices are used in poetry to express expression and ambiance. Robert Frost and Sylvia Plath use the borrowed voice in both the poems named Mirror’s and Daddy by Sylvia Plath and The Road Not Taken and A Brook in the City by Robert Frost. In Mirror’s the owner of the mirror grows older as he looks into the mirror. The mirror is very truthful and is not cruel only portrays what it sees. The poem Daddy is about Plato’s deceased father and speaker talks about living in a black foot for thirty years. In The Road Not Taken by Frost two roads are diverged in a yellow wood and Frost cannot travel both. The speaker notices both the roads are equally as worn and states he will take the other road another day. In Frost’s A Brook in the City the farmhouse represents rural landscape in the very old days just as the brook does. The rural land is being destroyed and not too many people care.
Using borrowed voices in these poems emphasize the ingenuity of the poems and expression used by both poem writers. Another voice is often used to give mystery and back drama to a poem as done in these four poems.
Frost and Plath were born from different eras on in the 19th century and one in the 20th century though they both wrote with a lot of drama and expression. Both lived abroad and in the states and wrote their very best poems during dismal and tranquility. This shows a great poet can come from long ago and another can adopt the others style of writing centuries later.
The borrowed voice in Frost’s two poems were used to express expression with nature and tranquility as the borrowed voice spoke in the third person. The borrowed voice in Plath’s poems were used to emphasize Plato’s role in the poems through transition from one character and scene to another.
