Analysis on Global Warming and Climate Change, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 417

Essay

The article “Global Warming and Climate change” appearing on New York Times attempts to analyze and present a highly controversial subject amongst many Americans today. It details the precise grave concern about rapidly rising global temperatures despite concerted efforts and global agreements geared towards reduction. The writer further goes ahead and describes specific signs that are clear indicators of continuing global warming; 2012 was the hottest year in United States ever. He also does not fail to recognize gains by the developed to green house gas emission reduction. However, he attributes these gains to inevitable circumstances rather than to real effort. The economic down turn, transfer of most manufacturing from developed world and increasing use of natural gas as opposed to coal. In a nutshell, he claims that the increasing gains by the developed are supplanted by the developing world.

The writer further provides additional evidence from reputed scientific institutions: glacial research showing massive reduction of glacier coverage. He also compares the temperatures and glacial coverage in the 1950s to date. However, despite the scientific consensus on the reality of increasing global, conclusions and the way forward remains unclear. Various groups on opposing sides have come up and are working hard to influence energy policies and the political discourse. He also points out that climate change and global warming has lost its place as a key campaign issue. He seems to insinuate that less concern is being given to the real threat of global warming.

As an individual, I believe climate change is real and should be a key priority to the world leaders. The article does a good job of logically tracing the climate change movement, providing scientific evidence, indicating the greatest polluters and outlining consultative global efforts toward green house gas emission reduction. However, it is crucial to note that the writer does not actually focus on the resistance movement; there is not enough information on groups that are promoting climate change as a fallacy.

The author does not use any rhetorical devices but relies a lot on deductive reasoning to develop his argument. A clear example of deductive reasoning is where the author extrapolates data from the 1950s to date to show how over time, human activities have tremendously impacted the environment around the globe. He uses syllogism where he combines the premise of reported highest temperature in America with the glacial research to conclude the reality of global warming.
