While many individuals claim that educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed, this is not the case. Many professors and students assume that their college or university has a unique understanding of their students, but this is often untrue. Colleges and universities are large systems that often do not have time to invest in each of their students. While they are able to provide them with resources that will help guide them along their journey, the educational institution as a whole is unable to gain a sufficient understanding of a student’s abilities, wishes, and needs in a manner that would allow them to be in a place to dissuade them prom pursuing certain fields of study.

Because the educational institution cannot be completely familiar with each student, they are also not able to provide study recommendations to students. Often, even if a student is not succeeding in a program, they are learning valuable skills that they may be able to apply to a different field. Higher learning provides students with the opportunity to explore different topics, even those they may find that they are not good at. While it isn’t reasonable to allow students to achieve complete failure, as long as they are building some form of knowledge from their studies, the experience can be deemed successful. Grades are not always an indicator of learning. For example, while an individual may be failing chemistry because he or she is unable to complete the complex mathematic calculations, the student may have gained a conceptual understanding of the science that could be used to gain a greater understanding of the chemical concepts used in cooking. We must therefore treat each student’s educational experience as their own journey and avoid intervening so that they may learn to succeed on their own; only the students can define their own successes.
