Jane E. Brody’s “Overweight and Pregnant” deals with the manner in which obese women have been shown to have problems during childbirth. This kind of obesity can leads the women’s children to have defects when they are born or for them not to be able to be born at all. Because of this, there have been a number of physicians who have opted against taking care of obese women. The article goes on to talk about the manner in which it is unfair for physicians to say that they do not want to care for an obese women simply because the physicians are afraid that they might get sued for malpractice if complications were to happen during the childbirth or if the child were to die.
Brody’s article is intended for an everyday audience. What is meant by this is that the article uses common day terminology in order to get its point across. It explains the manner by which individuals would be able to go about looking for a physician who might help them and who might put them on the right track in order to lose weight. The article is also able to discuss wha kind of diet programs usually work and goes on to explain how the women who are often times the most successful in losing hundreds of pounds are those who come in the most motivated to work and with the most willpower. The reason for this is because women who want to lose weight but do not have the necessary motivation to get up to exercise everyday or to portion out their meals so that they do not overeat invariably fail.
I believe that the author is able to explain this article in an effective manner. Seeing as how this article was published in the New York Times this means that the intended audience is the public. With this kind of information, it goes without saying that the terminology should not be directed towards only those individuals who understand medicine or something along the lines of that. I believe Brody understands this concepts well enough to provide readers with an article rich with information about the topic but also places a constraint on the kind of information that is released so that the readers are not bored whilst reading the article. The layout of the article is certainly easy to follow and the information is easy to understand because of how well the author wrote it. It is evident that the author understands the audience that is being written for and also understands that the points must be made well in order for everyone to be able to understand what is being said.
Personally, I liked the article a lot because it provided me with new kind of information about something that I did not previously know about. Now, due to this article, I know that obesity has a big impact in the manner by which women become pregnant and the kind of role that obesity might play when dealing with pregnancies. I now understand that in order for a women to be able to have a healthy baby, she must be more than willing to make certain sacrifices in order to ensure that when the baby is born, he or she is alive and well. If a woman does not take care of her body before pregnancy or throughout a certain pregnancy, then the effects that this could have on the baby are many. Worst case scenario, the child could not be born at all and the woman would be left without a baby. The information was certainly practical and easy to understand. Because of how well the article was written, I believe I can now apply this information to my everyday life. For example, I can help those around me take care of their bodies when expecting a baby or, better yet, when these individuals are pregnant.
When I took a look at the second article that was provided, I could immediately tell that the intended audience for this article was for those that are deeply involved in the medical field. Not to say that I did not understand absolutely anything that the article was saying, but I certainly had a more difficult time comprehending everything that was being said when compared to the amount of time it would have taken someone in the medical field to understand everything. Because of this, I strongly believe that the authors of this article created this article in order to inform medical leaders on the kinds of things that have an influence on obese pregnancy.
In general, I believe that the two articles talk about the same issue, but from a different perspective. Whereas the first article is able to effectively talk about the manner in which individuals with obesity might experience a variety of problems when attempting to get pregnancy or throughout their pregnancy, the second article explains practically the same thing but from a medical perspective. The article is able to identify key points that might have a major influence on the kind of pregnancy that an individual is able to have. If a physician were to read both of the articles, I believe he or she would enjoy reading the second article better because of the way in which the article could relate directly to his or her profession. On the other hand, an everyday individual would, without a doubt, enjoy reading the first article much more because it would speak to him or her in a better fashion.
The language in the first article is very easy to understand whereas in the second article, an individual might have to read the article as a whole at least twice in order to fully comprehend what is being said about the issue at hand. Not only that, but I definitely think that the flow and structure of the first article is much better. Thought my interpretation of the two articles might perhaps be a little too biased because of the way in which I was not able to fully understand and appreciate everything that the second article was trying got convey, I certainly believe that a vast majority of individuals would agree with me when discussing which of the two articles they enjoying reading the most. Perhaps the individuals who would most likely disagree with me would be those from the medical field who understood absolutely everything that the article is trying to say.
I did have the opportunity to learn a vast amount of things from the second article as well as the first article, but I believe my mind was able to process the information from the first article in a much smoother fashion because the language was something that came more naturally to me. Because of the manner in which I had to slowly process everything that was being said in the second article, it was more difficult for me to be able to understand, acknowledge, and fully appreciate what was bing said. I do believe that a medical leader would gain a vast amount of knowledge from the second article, however.
Because of this, I come to the conclusion that despite the fact that both articles are able to provide individuals with a vast amount of knowledge, ultimately, what is gained from the article is directly related to the kind of knowledge that an individual might have. Because of this, the whole question of being able to decide which article is better becomes a question of subjectivity. What this means is that the better of the two articles is completely dependent on the kind of article that a certain individual might enjoy. As for me, I would much rather stick to the first article, as its message on obesity spoke to me in a better fashion.
