Should animal testing be allowed? Animal testing is a practice which should be permitted by the law since it furthers the understanding and identification of lifesaving treatments providing a working base for most medical practices while capturing vital information within the shortest time.
As much as animal testing may be dangerous to animals, on the contrary, the same test may prove fatal in humans. Animal experimentation plays an essential role in our daily health since it furthers the understanding and treatment of diseases. It is because of animal testing that the researchers can develop lifesaving cures and treatment, organ transplant, protocols for prevention, vaccines, antibiotics, determination of medication toxicity and blood transfusion. Biomedical scientists argue that an understanding of diseases is unmanageable without animals (Rights, and Keith 77). Animal activists hold that the body of humans is very complex and hard to control, unlike animals which that can be regulated and controlled in the laboratory (Rights, and Keith 78). For this reason, animals are the appropriate subject for lab testing by the medical and cosmetic institutions.
Secondly, animal testing provides the appropriate working basis for many medical practices although it has been criticized by moral philosophers who deem that test as unnecessary. Notably, forfeiting animals make products safer for both humans and animals. Most cosmetic tests which pass animal test fail in the human clinical test. Basing on this argument, it is not reasonable to use humans for testing because it is dangerous and risky in the event the test fails. For this reason, it is necessary to use animals in medical practices. There have been many advances in the pathological field just from the animal testing. Animals like a rabbit can be used in medical practice for experiments.
I agree that the cosmetic companies’ methods to evaluate irritation caused by shampoo and similar products are risky for animals. However, it is riskier to use people for testing. Additionally, the lifespan of an animal is much shorter than that of humans. Animal testing provides vital information within the shortest time hence saving more human lives. Although some scientists like Kara Rogers believes that computer models should be used instead of animals, nonetheless, the computer models are not advanced enough to replace animals.
In conclusion, although I believe using animals for medical experiments should be banned for testing out the effects of products such as cosmetics and shampoos which are not required to be tested before being purchased, I do believe that the law should not ban animal testing used for medicine and health improvement. Using animals for scientific research has more benefits than negatives. Without animal testing, major findings such as breast cancer medication; Herceptin, would not have been found. As much as I believe using animals for medical experiments may be risky; however, it is much riskier to let humans suffer or die from their illness without trying to look for ways to help them regarding medication just because animals should not be used for lab experiments.
