CDC. (n.d.). Heart Disease Facts. Retrieved from http://www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/facts.htm

This article provides useful statistics related to heart disease that help demonstrate its prevalence and its relationship with African American women. Out of the 380,000 heart disease deaths that occur annually in the United States, 24.5% of these deaths is suffered by African Americans, which is higher than any other ethnicity. These deaths also vary geographically, with a large number of deaths occurring in major cities and in the Southeast. This resource is reliable because the Center for Disease Control is a government funded agency.

Ignarro, LJ; Balestrieri, ML, Napoli, C. (2007). Nutrition, physical activity, and cardiovascular disease: an update. Cardiovascular research, 73 (2): 326–40.

This article discusses the risk factors for heart disease as we currently understand them. Although there is a link between heart disease and genetics, nutrition and physical activity are of a greater concern because patients can actively work towards altering these behaviors in order to improve their own physical health. This source is reliable because it was published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Taylor, RS; Ashton, KE; Moxham, T; Hooper, L; Ebrahim, S. (2011). Reduced dietary salt for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Cochrane database of systematic reviews (Online) (7): CD009217.

This article is useful because it describes the relationship between heart disease and the use of salt. Salt is used frequently in soul food, which is commonly enjoyed by African American women. This information could be used to advise this population against using as much salt in order to reduce their risk of getting this disease. This source is reliable because it was published in a peer-reviewed journal.
