Annual Inspection in the Reform Schools, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 314

Essay

Reform schools have experienced many changes since their establishment in 1848. The changes that occurred after the civil war brought both negative and positive impacts to the juvenile prisons, creating the need for government inspections. The reforms were initiated because ofreports of inmates being harassed by the manufacturers. Concerns were made which made schools to be amongst government institutions that were inspected annually. It is, therefore, important to speculate how this new change is going to affect the future of these institutions.

In my opinion, this change is going to ensure that the real purpose of these schools is being met by those who are heading them. It will ensure that their standards are met as per the requirement for all public institutions. The schools will be more of corrective and learning institutions rather than being places for punishment and even torture. Inspection in these schools will ensure that the management and other staff properly keep records of activities in the institution since they will be required to produce them during the inspection. The inspections of the schools woulddefinitely see many parents take their children to be corrected since they have confidence in them. Parents will be relieved with the burden of dealing with their ill- behaved children.

It may be thought that there will be expansions of these schools all around the United States since their good reputation shall necessitate their construction. Government inspection into these schools shall indicate government support of the institutions. The institutions that will be meeting the required standards might be awarded funds to improve their services. It is also very important to realize that the inmates will be able to continue with their normal life of learning in the juvenile prisons as they do not have to wait until they are released. The annual inspection will, therefore, be of great benefit to the inmates, the parents and the government itself.
