The contribution of Plato
The main theme within that of Plato’s Republic is the focus on the defence of justice. Despite this he also includes a powerful philosophical defence of Education. These are not always easy to interpret because of the complexities of the dialogue taking place. One of the key deliberations in the Republic is that which he relates to his ideal portrayal of society. He made a number of important observations on Educators and the Educational system. A great deal of this philosophy still having relevance today.
Plato believed that the Educators must have a passion for what they taught. This to embody a deep conviction of the subject matter and a care for the well-being and future of those they work with. Plato is therefore seeing Education in terms of both a moral and ethical responsibility. As such it is the duty of those who teach and educate others to search for the truth and be virtuous in guiding those for whom they have the responsibility to teach. In this sense Plato is saying that the teachers must not be just peddlers of their wares but be empathetic in their teaching responsibility and the development of others.
The development of Mathematics
The origins of the development of mathematics in Greece date back as far as the 7th century BC. Much of the recognition in terms of development of mathematics is cited as being the work of Thales of Miletus. Pythagoras later became noted for his work in the field of geometry. It was Aristotle who used mathematics in a number of different ways in his treatises. Within his role of a philosopher he successfully used mathematics in order to develop logic. His philosophy of mathematics blended science in that of mathematical sciences. A great deal of the mathematical though process developed by Aristotle still influences modern day thought in this subject area. Aristotle who tutored Alexander the Great was also a great advocate in the use of mathematics in philosophy. He used the theoretical constructs of mathematics in order to express views on other aspects of theoretical sciences.
Great Leader – Pericles 495-429 BC
Pericles was a great leader of Athens and responsible for reconstructing Athens after the Persian wars. He went about restructuring and refortifying Athens. He was also recognized to be the driving force of Athens during Peloponnesian wars. He was responsible for improving the judicial system in ancient Athens and the appointment of magistrates overseeing the citizenship law. He later died of the plague which ravaged the city of Athens in 429 BC. Pericles was considered to have held a great influence over Athenian society and was described as being the first citizen of Athens. He promoted the studies of the arts and literature. As a politician he was one of the first people to stress the importance of philosophy on Greek society. Pericles became the undisputed champion and leader of Athens, particularly after Ephialtes was murdered in 461 BC. He remained the leader until his death in 429 BC
