Essay

The crowd stood pungent with sweat in the afternoon heat. The patches of umbrellas looked like a blur of colors. The anticipation was thick in the air. The senator had not arrived yet the main attraction. Rumors abound anticipation pole numbers on a wires edge.

Karl Rove a young idealist stood in the buzz of the Democratic Party headquarters wide eyed with the awe of being a part of this mayhem. A beehive wasn’t that busy. The preverbal clock was ticking two weeks to the elections. They were fifteen basis points behind John McCain not to say they didn’t stand a chance there was always the independents. That is what was running through the minds of all the youthful looking volunteers.

Karl loved it all, the excitement, the frenzy and the controlled chaos. He walked around inspecting everything. He came to the large intimidating doors of the board room. The buzz behind him fell silent as he walked in and let the doors swing shut. Strolling slowly to the head of the long table he silently observed the telephone operators frantic attempts to sway their prospective voters. He fell into a long meditative silence, a trance if you will.

The silence was broken like the shattering of glass by half a dozen volunteers. The noisily chatted as they assumed their seats. The murmur from outside still buzzing as the door slowly slide shut. Then a silence returned mixed with a touch of confusion, with the sheepish and quizzical look on their faces. Is he the campaign strategist? Should we ask him? But he looks so young. Thoughts kept running, but no voices stating.

“I’m not going to say young people don’t have good ideas, Nor shall I say experience is the best teacher, but what I am saying is we need strong leadership. Are you that strong leader?” the older gentleman bellowed in a commanding voice. Karl didn’t flinch, he just stared trying to work it all out then it clicked. They thought he was the campaign strategist. The defining silence of a graveyard fell like a blanket in the night.

Karl rose to his feet slowly and stared each and every one in the eyes and said “ tells everyone manning the phones to call everybody who is in the vicinity of McCain’s next campaign rally to ask a very simple question. Would you vote for a republican who claims family values if he had an illegitimate black child outside of wed lock?” Karl watched as their jaws dropped. As a flurry of questions came he raised his index finger and walked out. The busy office all but ignored him as he passed them by. Once outside he pulled out a cigarette. As he inhaled the soothing smoke he thought to himself, “ What the hell was I doing?” He walked back into the offices and went directly to a corner. This time a few eyes fell on him as he listened to the telemarketers.

The crowds had gathered waiting for the veteran republican senator. He was famous for his conservatism his stance on the war on Iraq and Afghanistan. He’s record as a veteran of the Vietnam War. What he was not famous for was his family who he wanted to introduce to the people to show them that side of him.

Back at the office they had moved on to a text based campaign the crowds were now receiving texts. “ Would you vote for a Person who had an illegitimate black child?” The crowd not only wanted to hear his policies there was something else that gave them great anticipation. The moment had arrived John McCain stepped on to the podium and after a few words he introduced America to his family. He proudly held up his youngest in his arms. A gorgeous eight year old black girl caught the public’s eye, who he had adopted while touring in Africa.
