Argument, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 340

Essay
  1. The author’s claim is that divorce is tearing apart the country and should be outlawed.  The grounds of the argument are that it reduces productivity in the workplace, it has a negative impact on children, and individuals are likely to divorce multiple times in their life which can cost thousands or even millions of dollars.  The warrant connects the grounds to the claim through an inferential leap.  In this case, the warrant states that the problems of divorce have multiple negative effects, so by outlawing divorce it eliminates the negative effects and will cease tearing apart the country.  The backing suggests that the warrant will be upheld because children will live in a better environment without divorce, economics will improve, and we will be able to trust one another again.
  2. The author uses deductive reasoning by stating that if problems exist that could be negative effects of divorce; it is clear that by outlawing divorce the negative effects would disappear, along with the problems.  Finally, the author uses exemplar reasoning by showing how his childhood friend was negative affected by divorce.
  3. Types of evidence used were facts, statistics and examples to help support the author’s claims.
  4. There are several fallacies within this argument.  First of all, the author the author uses the fallacy affirming the consequent by stating that by outlawing divorce, it will create a monogamous society.  Divorce is not the cause for sexual behavior; rather it is the other way around.  The author also believes that by eliminating divorce it will improve production in the workplace.  People naturally dislike work and use any number of things to distract themselves psychosocially, so it is hard to believe that eliminating divorce would actually increase production.  This fallacy is called moving the goalposts where the author is looking to create grounds for the argument by demanding impossible perfection.  The author uses this fallacy again by stating that outlawing divorce would increase the amount of trust that people have for one another, which is an impossible idealistic flaw that many people use in their arguments.
