Research Paper

Identify the “Burning psychiatric nursing question”, using the PICO to guide question. Describe the population, intervention, comparison, & outcome of your question.

Population: Psychiatric patients who smoke cigarettes while receiving treatment

Intervention/Indicator: Smoking cessation programs

Comparison: No smoking cessation; antidepressants

Outcome of Interest: Quitting smoking
Describe at least 2 evidence-based practice models appropriate for psychiatric nursing; critique similarities & differences of the models.

Evidence-based practice models in nursing include the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice to Promote Quality Care and the ACE Star Model (Keele, 2012). The former model considers an existing trigger, followed by the formation of a team to address the problem, synthesis of the evidence, and a subsequent change in practice (Keele, 2012). The latter model consists of five steps, including discovery, summary, translation, integration, and evaluation (Keele, 2012). Both models support the identification of problem-based evidence in order to develop new instruments to integrate into routine practice settings; however, the latter model primarily focuses on knowledge acquisition and integration in order to achieve evidence-based practice objectives (Keele, 2012).
Identify the clinical question that prompts evidence search; identify key search terms; Describe how key search terms & clinical questions were determined.

The clinical question requires the development of strategies that are effective in addressing smoking in patients experiencing mental illness, since smoking is a significant concern within this patient population.

Identify and describe the number of articles obtained from searching & possible need for refinement of question (Pubmed).

Using the evidence grading system attached, rate at least 4 studies, using the evidence based review matrix (attached) to record your assessment. Describe the relationship between levels of evidence & grades of recommendation.

Summarize work (ie. how you will build on the beginning search).

This study represents an opportunity to explore the different insights into smoking in patients with mental deficiencies or mental illness. Although this population appears to be largely understudied, it is important to identify the resources that are necessary to ensure that patients with mental illness who also smoke are properly treated, including an effort to reduce this habit through smoking cessation efforts. These factors must be applied to future studies in order to accomplish the desired objectives.
