Research Paper

Information system contributions have the ability to contribute to the improved quality of DNP health care delivery (Ledikwe et al., 2014). Ultimately, these systems allow for a meaningful interpretation of data that could be used to design interventions in a manner that will promote quality improvement initiatives in the health care setting. In particular, electronic health record systems are used to keep track of patient data and improve communication between members of the hospital staff. Prior to the implementation of electronic records, paper records were used. This method did not require an organized tracking of information, took a long time to retrieve, and notes were often challenging to interpret. The implementation of electronic systems resolved these problems in a manner that helped to improve DNP health care delivery.

One of the most important information system contributions that have helped quality improvement initiatives is the link that many electronic health record systems have to the pharmacy (AHIMA, 2013). Because of this connection, health care practitioners are able to effectively and accurately transmit prescription data directly to the pharmacist. This helps reduce medication errors that result from a misinterpretation of handwriting and allows the pharmacist to deliver the medication to the patient in a timelier manner. As a consequence, patients that require an immediate need for pain medication do not have to wait suffering before their medication is brought before them.

Electronic health record systems are beneficial for many additional reasons, including allowing the nurse to track health record information over time. However, it is important to consider that the main practicalities of this technology is the quick access and utilization of records. This information could be used in a manner that allows practitioners to significantly improve the quality of care.
