Introduction

I am an employee at the New Aurora Grafton Hospital that opened November 1, 2010.  After reviewing the Mission statement of Aurora Health Care, I do believe that it truly reflects the care that is provided by the Hospital and its staff.  I am employed as a respiratorytherapist and I interviewed my manager who is responsible for overseeing the respiratory therapy department.

Aurora health care’s mission

The mission of Aurora Health Care, as a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care system, is to promote health, prevent illness and provide state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment, in accordance where we are best able to meet both individual and family needs.Aurora Health Care is committed to improving the quality of health care and outcomes through the rapid and broad application of knowledge. The facility is engaged in the education of health care professionals and the ongoing quest for new knowledge, through medical research, to contribute to the quality of health care in the future.

Owing to the recognition of the personal nature of health care services, we are committed to creating environments that meet the diverse physical, emotional, spiritual, social and economic needs of our patients and clients. In addition, meeting the needs of the people who serve them.Aurora is concerned with the overall welfare of the communities. It is recognized that there are limits to the resources people can invest in health care. Working in a collaborative environment the people of Aurora are determined to provide services of the highest quality. Further, to make those services affordable and accessible to every person in the community served.[1]

The mission statement is on the Aurora Healthcare website and on most healthcare literature.  It is also available for staff on the hospital intranet.

The Mission Statement is fairly comprehensive and is currently undergoing revision.   It was developed by the administrative board of Aurora Health Care, with the approval of Nick TurkalMD ,(Aurora Healthcare)the president and CEO of Aurora Health Care.  As explained by my manager, Deborah Hammer, the mission statement is currently toolong in order to fully memorize it; Nick Turkal stated that he doesn’t even know what it says.  So Aurora health care focuses more on the core values. Which are stated below:-

Purpose vision and values

Our purpose: What we do

We help people live well.

The statement relates to those we treat, those who receive preventative care, and those we care for at the end of their lives. We help by listening to, partnering with and caring for patients, families and each other. Our purpose is about hope. It speaks to simplicity and quality outcomes, the centerpiece of our integrated model of care.

Our purpose statement, combined with our vision and values below, is the foundation of Aurora’s 2011 to 2013 strategic plan. This plan is our roadmap to fulfill our purpose. Your active participation is critical.

Our vision: What we aspire to Provide people with better health care than they can get anywhere else.

By focusing on this simple aspiration, we continue to work together, to innovate and to find better ways to provide health care. Our vision sets us apart from other health care providers and can benefit all patients who depend on us for their care.

Our values: What we believe

Every patient deserves the best care Responsibly managing resources Building a healthy workplace through accountability, teamwork and respect

Our three values are the foundation of our behaviors and set the tone for what we do every day. Our values continue to guide us as we move forward.
Our actions: How we get there

  • Continuously improve the patient experience
  • Expand care management and system clinical programs

2011 to 2013 strategic targets: How we measure our success

Top quartile performance nationally in quality

Top quartile performance nationally in patient loyalty

Top quartile performance nationally in caregiver engagement

Every person that is hired into Aurora Healthcare has to attend an orientation.  During the orientation, they review the mission statement and core values.  Every care provider can make a difference.  We are instructed on how to provide the best care and outstanding patient experience; most of all always smile.  Each working day I strive to give the best care.  Only last Wednesday another respiratory therapist and I were caring for a patient, and he mentioned to us that it was his birthday.  He asked if the staff if we could get him a card and sign it.  This patient was lonely.  He was ill, alone in the hospital without any visitors.   So, my co-worker and I went to the gift shop and bought him a card.  We had all his caregivers sign it, and gave it to him.  The room lit up with his bright smile.  Its little things like this that can provide a positive patient experience.

Aurora strives on teaching all of their employees to constantly smile.  Even if you are busy, it doesn’t take any extra time to smile!  During training we did an exercise, which I thought was very interesting.  Half of us stayed in the room and were blind folded and the other half of us made noise and were instructed to try to walk with us or pick us up.  It was trying to teach us the point of view from our patient’s perspective.  Many times staff can be loud or say inappropriate things around the nurse’s desk.   You may not realize it, but the patient can hear you.  Also, if a patient is weak, sleeping, blind, etc…it is important to always explain to your patients what you are doing first before you do it.  They may be startled or scared.

I believe that Aurora Healthcare does live by their mission statement.  They provide excellent training to their staff to carry out their core values. All of the staff at Aurora Grafton are very friendly and appear to like their job.
