Essay

My definition of science is that it can be complicated and easy at the same time. If one enjoys the concepts of science, then it is easy for them. On the other hand, if one has no interest in science, it can be difficult and frustrating. Additionally, knowledge is always changing because technology often allows scientists to make new discoveries.

At this point, I have little knowledge of science, so I am confused about how I feel about it. I have always thought science was difficult because there are too many little details that I need to know. For example, when I was in high school, I had to learn about rocks. I needed to know the name of each rock, its’ history, and its’ purpose. I also had to learn about planets that I would never visit; elements of the air that I breathe; and what causes weather to change. On a personal note, I believe that the things that God created should not be questioned by science.

With that being said, I still believe that science has a positive side. I admire scientists’ efforts in finding cures for deadly diseases. I also feel that they have made positive progress in creating preventative medicines that prolong life. I appreciate that they work hard to make our planet a better place to live. Finally, I give them respect because if a meteor were headed towards the earth, they would be the first ones trying to save our planet and all of life that exists within it. I am grateful that they have the courage to do the things that many “normal” people would not think of.

When I started junior high, I was introduced to science. I remember that I had just come to this country and my English was terrible. I remember that I felt lost and alone because of the language barrier. I often did not know what was going on. To this day, I don’t know how I passed that class. After I got to high school, I still had difficulty understanding what was being taught in science, but I also passed that class. I remember that the teacher was pushing us (students) to understand the content because of upcoming board exams. I recall crying because I thought that I didn’t do well. I thought that I was dumb and stupid because I did not understand science.

Now that I am grown, I realize that I didn’t appreciate science because of lack of exposure when I was young. When I become a teacher, I want science to be different in my classroom. I want my students to know that they are learning science and I want them to love it!

In my opinion, learning science should always be hands on. I believe that students learn better when there are manipulatives available for them to use. I think that many of the concepts in science are better learned when students are exposed to a visual experience such as a field trip. To encourage visual and hands on learning, I want to have a sand table and water, plants, measurement scales, balls to represent planets, drawing materials, and other learning resources available in my classroom. To promote interest in learning, I believe that the teacher should involve the students by asking them what they would like to learn about. Lastly, I think that the teacher should have a positive attitude that encourages students to learn.
