General Goal(s): Share the Baby Friendly Initiative program, progress that has been made and create an awareness on the importance of BFI to raise awareness to necessary future action steps

Specific Objectives: Educate class members on the Baby Friendly Initiative program, the benefits of breastfeeding for infants and mothers, important breastfeeding positions and

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): The lead-in will involve sharing important health risks and statistics involve with poor care giving techniques for infants and mothers. Shocking statistics will be used to raise awareness to the need for education and health programs such as BFI.

Step-By-Step Procedures: Following the lead-in, instruction will turn to educating the class on the history of BFI and the important risk factors that it attempts to counteract. Raising awareness to dangers of not breastfeeding both health-related and non-health related (financial) will help create a natural opportunity to educate the class on proper breastfeeding techniques. Students will first learn the LATCH score and how it can be used to identify areas of necessary improvement in breastfeeding technique. Furthermore, students will be shown top breastfeeding positions, when to use each position, as well as cues for mothers to use to identify when infants need to be fed. Finally, students will learn the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding as the course turns back toward identifying the importance for educating mothers on proper technique and how the BFI can be used as a successful tool to address risk factors and properly educate mothers and expected-mothers on health dangers associated with poor health behaviors including breastfeeding habits and practices.

Plan For Independent Practice:

– Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): The class will conclude with a general class discussion asking members to identify several risk factors associated with poor breastfeeding techniques and overall infant care. Finally, the discussion will turn to a concluding statement by the teacher to wrap up the concept that the BFI can be used to address each of the key risk factors and what action steps the class members can take to become involved.

– Assessment Based On Objectives: Students will be given a series of worksheets to help understand the LATCH score and two work-alone unique examples where they must understand how the LATCH score can impact the quality of breastfeeding for mother and infant.
