Background on Gun Control, Essay Example

Pages: 3

Words: 812

Essay

The United States is the leading country that experiences deaths caused by gun violence. People who are in support of gun control prefer having stricter laws on ownership and sale of guns. However these people are challenged by other people and manufacturers who try to protect the right to own guns. These people try to avoid new law and perhaps bring back the existing laws in the books. Gun control has brought a significant number of deaths like the deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. In 2008, the Supreme Court claimed that the Bill of rights had to include the right of ownership of guns. In the past years, there have been proposals for the amendment of the law on gun ownership. In this paper, I will make arguments that agree with the author of “background on gun control”.

The author argues while attempting to solve the serious challenge of violence in the United States antigun groups continue to focus on the ownership of guns and recap the ancient arguments that studies have confirmed to be untrue. I agree with this argument. I agree that if more people are allowed to have guns, there may be more possibilities of gun fights. This is because there are people permitted to carry guns in the forty states, and this has brought a lot of gun fights. People who have guns are likely to involve in gun violence. This is because these people may easily use the guns when and how they want. People who have guns are also likely to indulge in suicide. Since the gun is the easiest way to take an individual’s life, people who are depressed may decide to kill themselves with guns. Children too may use guns violently because of the influence of the violent movies that they watch.

I also concur with the writer when he argues that there should be a restriction on the purchasing of handguns. This is because if there are no restrictions on the purchasing of guns, criminals may take advantage of this and buy the guns in bulk to conduct illegal activities. There is also the possibility of purchasing of the handguns in bulk by gun smugglers. I concur with the writer when he states that most of the handguns that are used to conduct the criminal activities are often bought in bulk by gun smugglers. If there are no restrictions to purchase guns, there is a possibility that the criminal gangs will purchase the guns in bulk. There is also a possibility that the impact of a hand gun law will affect a significant fraction of the illegal gun market. The government should control the sellers of these guns to limit the possibility of gun smuggling by the gangs and criminals.

The author also argues that there ought to be a ban on large capacity magazines. This is because these magazines encourage the murderers kill numerous victims. It is true that having fifteen bullets in a magazine rather than ten bullets makes guns more lethal. Children may read these magazines, and when they read magazines that depict gun violence, there may be a possibility that they may indulge in gun violence. Magazines may be influential, not only to children, but also young adults. When people feed their minds with violent stuff on these magazines, they may also indulge in gun violence.

I concur with the writer when he argues that American video games and movies have turned out to be extremely violent. The whole world views the American market entertainment for its glorification of violence in these video games and movies. These violent scenes in movies and video games have an impact on how people use guns, especially the younger generation. The author also states that the number of shootings in the United States is nineteen times higher than those in other developed nations. These American video games and movies have also had an impact on other nations. The impact is especially large on children because they are the target market for such violent video games or movies. The United States have more permissive gun laws compared to other nations in the world. I concur with the writer when he argues that the Americans are not really violent people, but when they feel violent, they are highly likely to get their hands on a gun.

Conclusion

When there are no restrictions on gun ownership, there is a high possibility that people, especially criminals, may purchase the guns in bulk to conduct criminal activities. This means that the United States ought to put restrictions on the ownership of guns to reduce the rate of gun violence. America produces the most violent movies and video games in the world for a global market. The United States experienced nineteen shootings more than other developed countries because of the high influence from violent video games and movies.
