Research Paper

Barbour and Dyson discuss that technology has a direct relationship to freedom and social justice. “Chapter 1: Views of Technology” calls to our attention the contrasting views of technological advances. Some individuals believe that technological advances will aid the evolution of man, while others believe that it will hinder our ability to interact with one another. It is important to consider that technology has a broad definition and includes the development of tools that aided the furthering of knowledge and equality through tools such as the printing press. This invention allowed for the widespread availability of books, marking a shift of power from upper class individuals in the fourteenth century.

A second example of technology is the technology that we used on a regular basis in modern times. These tools include our cell phones, television sets, and automobiles. Unlike the equalizing nature of technology in the fourteenth century, modern technology stratifies us. We notice a clear social difference between the individuals that are able to afford the latest devices, those who must wait to acquire these device, and those who are not able to obtain them at all. This has a subsequent impact on our lifestyle; not only are these devices symbolic of affluence, they make our lives easier which creates an even greater social barrier between the rich and poor.

Since the modern laptop computer is an essential component of our everyday lives, I have selected this technology for analysis. We can consider this device as a means of both enabling participation and as a contributor to social justice. One of the major reasons for this is that this technology is widely available. Since nearly every individual has a laptop computer at his or her hands, everyone has the same potential to learn and communicate by using it as a tool. While the laptop computer certainly varies according to price, speed, and capability, only the top of the line products are considered expensive and the less expensive products are still operational. Laptops confer equality among modern individuals because there are many options by which one can acquire them. If an individual is unable to purchase a new laptop, he or she could simply log on to the internet and find a used model at a price that is considered affordable for them.

One of the ways laptops contribute to social justice is by allowing individuals to view essential information about their world. Once connected to free or purchased Wi-Fi, laptop computers become a hub to local and world news. This contributes to social justice because it allows all people to have the same access to information about the world around them. Understanding of current events allows them to appear more intelligent in conversation and facts learned may help advance their careers or status with friends.

An example of a way that laptop computers can be used to enable participation is by encouraging communication between friends, family, and even strangers. Social media and web forums allow individuals to constantly exchange ideas and information that contributes to our sense of belonging. While people may use these tools differently, as some individuals prefer social media, instant messaging, or video calls, laptop owners have equal access to all of these programs which allow them to remain in constant communication with their world.

Technology is constantly evolving, but it is likely that people will always use devices that allow for internet communication and news access and that it will be widely available. Therefore, although some individuals view technology as a negative impact on socialization, it will remain an equalizer among people.
