Jack Pelutsky is the author of the poem which is titled: Be Glad for the Nose on Your Face. The author intended it to be a comical poem. The poem causes the reader to visualize the nose and the positioning on the human anatomy. The author reads the poem as a narrator and states that if the nose were positioned in the ear, on the head or one the feet, an individual may perceive the eclectic ideas which are stated in the poem.  Jack Pelutsky applies illustrations which cause the poem to remain in the mind of the audience.

The poem is amusing and readily understood by children. The words which are applied by the author are simple and concise. Jack Pelutsky’s poem which is titled; Be Glad for the Nose on Your Face is a relatively recently published poem. The poem discusses the assumption that we should feel gratitude for the nose being positioned between the eyes and on the face. The inferences are that people should be thankful for the little things which are taken for granted.

This could allude to the most mundane items. The first object which is caught by the eyes is the nose and it is taken for granted. The inference of the poem is that people should be thankful for the objects which are mundane and viewed so frequently they are overlooked. The author applies rhyme designs, repetition and images. The rhyme design of the poem is AABB. The rhyme designs are applied in using “place” and “face”, “were” and “where”.

This is the application of rhyme riche which applies word that are homonyms in the use of ‘”were” and “were”. This application of rhyme riche gives the poem a musically oriented nature while simultaneously maintaining a comical quality. The author implements alliteration in the usage of the words “thin”, “thick” and “through”. The rhythm of the poem in separated into four lines per stanza. The poem consists of five stanzas.

The author uses a tetrameter to establish the tempo of the poem. The poem is spoken in a narrative tone, as if the author were reading the poem to the audience. The poem delineates all of the places where the nose might be positioned on the body and concludes with the place where the nose is actually positioned. As the readers consider the content of the poem, the author causes the reflection of the places here the nose may be positioned.  The author opens the poem with the title concludes the poem with the title: Be Glad for the Nose on Your Face.

The metaphors of the nose being located within the spaces of the toes and being required to constantly smell the feet enable readers to remember the metaphor for a long duration. The metaphors remain etched in the reader’s memory. The rhyme design is utilized in order to cause the poem to be memorized by the mental repetitions. When the reader considers the possibility of the nose being located on the crown of the head, it is such an absurd aspect that it makes the reader feel a sense of amusement by using their imagination.  The concept of a nose located in the ear is another absurd concept which would cause the readers to giggle.

The metaphor of the person which has the nose located inside of the ear and having the brain vibrate when they sneeze demonstrates a sense of levity. The author uses the poem to instruct children where the noise is and that the place that is located is the optimal location.  The author’s application of the line “imagine your precious nose” provides awareness as to the value of the nose which is overlooked. The qualifying characteristic of the nose being “thick” or “thin” sends an image which provides detail as to the aspects of the nose.

The author applies the use of the phrase “pasted on some other place” as a means to characterize that the body parts could be affixed by some form of glue. The aspect of being pasted makes the reader think of something that was not well designed.  This contrast provides meaning to the subsequent line “imagine your precious nose”.  The nose is one of the aspects with which many have to learn to accept and many strive to change. In the poem the author discusses that one should be happy with their physical nature and the absurdity of trying to change n their physical nature.

The rhyme design of the poem makes the poem very lively, very entertaining and gives a sense of wittiness with regards to the poem’s content. The application of metaphors causes the poem to vividly paint images in the reader’s mind.  The author applies the rhyme design of the poem to provide a sense of inference and formation to the poem. The poem is design to be narrated aloud.  The reader’s sense of hearing delights in perceiving the use of rhyme, the application of the rhyme design gives the poem an aspect of uniqueness and peculiarity.

The peculiarity of the poem is that it applies a calibrated amount of rhyme in order to tickle the readers’ ear. The author applies a monosyllabic rhyme pattern in addition to ending rhymes.  The rhyme design accentuates the stressed syllable. The perspective of the poem is comic verse; the robust and consistent use of the rhyme design causes the poem to flow. The rhyme design causes the theme of the poem titled:  Be Glad for the Nose on Your Face to have a harmonious nature.

The use of the rhyme design, rime riche, alliteration, metaphors and the four line five stanza characteristic cause the poem to remain in the readers mind as if it were an impressionist’s painting. The impression is made on the reader’s mind long after the poem has been read. The poem entices the reader with the urge to read the poem not once, not twice, a number of times in order to understand the author’s use of the literary implements.
