Essay

I have been living with the humans for several lunar cycles now, and the climate seems to be changing. The atmosphere is of a lower temperature, and the precipitation has changed from drops of water to white clusters of ice. A majority of the humans have been gathering evergreen trees from farms and bringing them into their homes, and despite the fact that it is difficult work, they seem cheerful as they do it. It has come to my attention that these peculiar creatures use the walls of their environment and the pages of their scriptures to promote goods and services. While looking through a volume of scripture about maintaining one’s physical health, I noticed an interesting promotion for a beverage. In it, a group of humans are dressed in their finest attire, are feasting on a ham and other food, and are standing around drinking cups of the beverage being promoted. What first struck me about this promotion was that every human depicted in it was physically attractive, and very happy. In the human gatherings I have been to, people have been pleasant and friendly, but no one has reached the level of physical perfection that the characters in this beverage promotion have. I suspect that this is a form of manipulation. The humans who sell this beverage must want its consumers to believe that they too can be happy and perfect if they consume it. The human economy runs of something called “currency,” which dates back several thousand years, when bartering and trading became more and more impractical for the growing civilization. Currency substitutes these things, and has become a universal means of gaining property and power for the humans. (History)  I believe that the humans behind this promotion are seeking a gain in currency. I cannot stress enough how powerful this manipulation is. The promotion for this beverage shows it being poured into elegant glasses at a human gathering with delicious food and overall good cheer. The promotion seems to be exploiting this particular time of the year, when the humans are most cheerful.  It mentions “old friends” and “great food,” which are both elements of this lunar cycle known as “December”.  According to my research and inquiries, December concludes with a day known a “Christmas,” followed by the celebration of the New Year.  The humans use more currency on goods in this lunar cycle than any other. (Topic)  I believe the reason for this is not because of Christmas, as that day celebrates the birth of a spiritual leader.  The reason is instead because the makers of the goods create these promotions that encourage other humans to consume these products.

It is also important to note that this product in particular has addictive qualities.  Three to six percent of the liquid in this beverage known as beer has something called ethanol in it.  This compound intoxicates the consumer, lowering its inhibitions and changing its mood.  While this image shows happiness and moderation, many of the humans who consume this beverage live lives of poverty and end up abusing the companions that they care about. (Alcohol)  The image refers to the “cheerful taste” of Budweiser, but this most likely alludes to the cheerful effects on the mind from the beverage.  The image avoids the look of poverty and addiction, and instead shows class, wealth and a good time for the humans. While the producers of the beverage would never admit it, I believe that they prey on addiction because it increases consumption and therefore increases the gain of currency for them.

The image also seems to hint that if one consumes it, they will gain the affection of the opposite gender.  The male pouring the beverage into the cup looks suave and attractive, and the female appears to be very attracted to him.  Her eyes are at him in excitement and her tongue is out.  While at first glance, the tongue may just be there because she is eating a piece of food, it is also a sexual gesture that appeals to the male humans’ subconscious.  The other pair of male and female seems to be very attracted to each other as well, and they are of course both holding cups of the beverage.

I may seem cynical in my description of a simple promotion for a human beverage, but I truly believe what I have stated.  It makes me afraid to think that groups of powerful humans can manipulate the general consumers like this.  I remember when I first looked at this promotion even I wanted to try this beverage known as Budweiser.  The way the promotion is so elegantly painted and looks so cheerful and innocent caught my attention, and if I am to be perfectly honest, I think I might try a Budweiser sometime before I leave Earth and return home.  I think it’s important to note that the humans are aware of the negative qualities of this beverage, and that there are worse products to promote and ways to manipulate people.  I once saw a promotion for a product that humans use to intentionally put a colossal of harmful chemicals into their lungs.  The promotion mentioned that doctors recommended this product!  If humans overall enjoy beer in moderation and with responsibility, I see no problem with this advertisement.  After all, if the advertisement only shows the good side of drinking beer, that is technically the only side that the producers of the beer are encouraging.  Humans have been known to binge drink this product until they pass out, but there is no sign of that in this promotion.  Instead, they are drinking in a way that appears to be slow and careful, and they certainly do not appear to be intoxicated.  At the end of the rotation of the Earth, or “day,” as the humans call it, this promotion reminds the humans that there is a drink that is fun to consume.
