Being an Inventor, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 336

Essay

When I read about Ben Franklin’s inventions, I read a common theme which was to identify a problem and devise an effective and practical solution to it. One of the things I have come to appreciate in America is the diversity of people, languages, and culture but I am often unable to fully interact with those who have minimum English language skills or none at all. I believe the number of non-English speakers will not only grow in America but also worldwide due to the emergence of other economic powers including India and China. Thus, I will invent a device that could be worn on the wrist like a watch and will help speakers of different languages effectively interact with each other without the need of an interpreter or a translator. The device will automatically translate a sentence spoken in a foreign language to the language of the speaker and similarly, the sentence spoken by the speaker to a foreign language for the other party to the communication.

This device will not only promote interaction among diverse groups in America and elsewhere but will also boost global tourism. Like most people, I also have had my fair share of ethnocentric beliefs and biases but only personal interaction with people from other cultures has helped me get rid of those biases and stereotypes. Only personal interaction will help people from different cultures come close to each other and help us create a better and more peaceful world.

The public has the power to shape the foreign policies of their governments and more informed public will be a stronger advocate of peaceful and diplomatic foreign policies. Globalization will increase economic interdependence among nations and any invention that can help people from different countries come close to each other is worth the investment. Language proficiency is one of the greatest communication barriers which is why I want to address this challenge because my invention will prevent the need to have language proficiency in order to interact with people from other countries.
