Being Grandfather, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 585

Essay

When we are young, we believe the world revolves around us. We only think about our own desires, wants, dreams, and how others perceive us. I only used to think about the present and thought the future always takes care of itself. I saw relations as formality and never understood their real value in life. But the purpose of life changed when I became a father and became even clearer after becoming a grandfather. After my first granddaughter Alexis was born, I experienced the most beautiful moment of my life and life has been very good to me now that I am grandfather to three beautiful children; Alexis, Carnell, and Markus who are six, four, and two years old, respectively.

My world used to revolve around me and now it revolves around my grandchildren. When making decisions, I would always be concerned about its consequences for me but now I always think about the potential consequences of an action for my grandchildren. When I plan vacations, I am always putting their choices over mine. When I make professional decisions, I am always thinking about securing their future. I bought my daughter a house close to where I live, in order to be near to my grandchildren. I have also started silver coin collection so that I leave a physical memento for them. I even took the overseas contractor job so that I can save more money for my grandchildren even though it requires a significant time away from home. I would not even bother about the future and now I don’t want to leave anything in the future to chance. Through my grandchildren I have learnt things about life that I didn’t learn before and it’s strange that I find life more beautiful now even though I live it more for others than myself.

My grandchildren have also made me realized that one continues to live through his future generations. My grandchildren motivate me to do positive things because I am aware they see me as a role model. I also know my actions do not have personal consequence only anymore but also for others close to me and this has turned me into a more pragmatic and objective thinker. I am more motivated to achieve something in life so I could show my grandchildren how much one is capable of he really puts his heart into everything he does.

When I am with my grandchildren, they sometimes teach me things that amaze me. I have learnt from my grandchildren that one should not judge others and be kind to everyone. I have also learnt the love of knowledge from my grandchildren because they are always curious and ask questions that demonstrate their genuine desire to know more. If everyone maintains these habits for their lifetimes, the world will be a much better place and there will less prejudice and stereotypes.

Becoming a grandfather has been the most positive thing that has ever happened to me because it has given me a purpose in life, taught me the beauty of human relations, made me experience the joy of giving to others, and helped me realized that I am capable of a lot more than I thought I was. It has also helped me get in touch with my compassionate side. Like they say, there is a time for everything and life lets you experience its different sides only over time. Maybe this is why wisdom comes with age and I know that because I am a living example.
