Have you had similar or different experiences?

The story

The movie starts in 1987, when Dr. Ben Carson (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) goes to Germany to assist a couple, Peter and Augusta Rausch. Siamese twins were born to this couple. They were joined to the head.  In Ben’s heart he believed that these twins could be successfully separated even though research showed where such cases usually die. In spite of this, Ben accepts the case to operate, but he felt like waiting four months to find a way how to save these children’s lives through a successful surgery. While waiting he did a few very successful surgeries, that gave him  some confidence. After four months the surgery was done and it was successful.

Have you had similar or different experiences?

My similar experience was trying a do task,  which seemed hard. Many people even my parents told me it was difficult to do because many teenagers my age did not get very far trying to complete this particular task. However, like ben I did it. I waited for a while; cried out to my inner self and was able to get my goals. Ben had an anger problem, which could have destroyed his career as a neurosurgeon. He realized that it was hard for him so he had to seek spiritual help. He got it very quickly.

My journey was not like Ben’s all the time in that I had both parents in my life and grew up as an only child. Also, both of my parents were there for me most of my childhood except when I went to visit with cousins during the summer at my grandparents.

What did you learn from these experiences?

I leant that we should not think about our parents as they seem to be because in Ben’s case his mother seemed dysfunctional. She had to check herself into a mental institution. In spite of this she knew her role as a single woman raising two African American boys. She knew that education was good. She did not give them much TV time. Another lesson I was able to get from this story was how a person can turn a bad situation into good. The times when Ben could not look at the television he and his brother looked the quiz show later. This was very good for them both.

Ben’s journey shows me that once somebody is focused they can get through many things. Waiting and planning what to do has taught me a lot about who Ben really is in this movie. It makes me know that taking time to plan can change the what happens to  people.

Did these experiences change your thinking or personality?

Yes! These experiences have changed the way I see life and people. My parents mean a lot more to me, now. To start something different, which someone said was hard or cannot happen is no more fearful to me, because I know now do it and was be successful. Also, I know of another person in this world who did it and is Ben Carson in Gifted Hands. My thinking has been changed since I now understand that there are other people who have had similar experiences as Ben and I.
