Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 307

Essay

To the extent that the Biostatistics and Epidemiology class is described as one of the most difficult, since it inspires “fear, unbelief and doubt”, my initial expectation and objection from the class is not to let this triad of FUD affect me negatively. Certainly, before I read the introductory course material, I did not have this apprehension of difficulty regarding the course, which is expressed in the course introductory materials. I accordingly expect to be challenged. However, this warning also has a practical purpose of making me aware of any possible problems I may encounter in my studies, thus informing the objective of overcoming them. My second expectation of the course is to encounter challenging material. My objective in this regard is to approach the material not only as something that I have to master, but also as something that may challenge my preconceptions and enrich my perspective. My final expectation is that I will at times feel bouts of insecurity because of the course’s difficulty. My objective, as the Biblical verses in the introductory material emphasizes, is to not be overwhelmed, but understand that making this challenge is my “inheritance.”

In order to satisfy “Great Expectations”, I will need to make a series of interpersonal adjustments. Firstly, I must not be intimidated by challenges. If I fail at the beginning, this does not mean I will be unable to complete the course material. Secondly, I will need to expect to succeed. This means that a sense of confidence and ultimately expectation informs my study. Thirdly, I will need to open to others, so that I may face these challenges. If I am unable to confront the material on my own, I must be able to swallow my pride, accept the virtue of humility, and ask others for assistance so as to achieve what I intend to achieve.
