Standing upright in grasslands enhanced both the field of vision for early hominids but made them visible to predators. Standing upright also helped them reach low-hanging fruit and keep their bodies cool.

Most animals expend the greatest amount of energy in reproduction, feeding, and ensuring safety. If these hominid males assisted in the survival of their mates and offspring, bipedalism would have helped males to provide food and protect their families from predators. Upright walking permitted early hominids to forage and bring food back more food. In more open environments, hands were free to make and use tools.

Bipedalism was a behavioral novelty that directly made many other advances possible. Nevertheless, it is not a perfect system. People endure foot problems, hernias, lower back pain caused by upright walking.
