Bloch School of Management an UMKC, Essay Example

Essay

I recently received a letter that was sent to notify me that I am academically ineligible to continue attending the Bloch School of Management an UMKC.  As of January 2014 I was reinstated to school on a provisional status, with the understanding that I had to achieve a minimum GPA of 2.7. At the end of the summer semester I had achieved a GPA of 2.33. While I understand that I fell a bit short of meeting the required 2.7 GPA, I am writing to appeal the decision and ask to be given one more opportunity to accomplish my educational goals. I am not appealing my GPA; I recognize that the GPA I earned does accurately reflect the grades I earned in my classes. I further acknowledge that I had agreed to meet the 2.7 requirement, and I take full responsibility for not quite reaching that goal. With this in mind, however, I would like to state that I faced some difficulties in achieving that GPA which, in hindsight, I could have avoided. I have learned from those mistakes, and I believe the experience I gained from them will help me achieve greater education accomplishments if I am given another chance to do so.

The most significant mistake I made this past summer was simply that I took on a greater courseload than I could manage. I do not have much experience as a student in the higher-education setting, so when I made decisions about which classes to take, and how many to take, I did not have the information or the wisdom and experience to recognize in advance that I had taken on too many classes at one time. As I was making the decisions about my schedule, I took into consideration the number of hours a week I would spend in each class as well as the number of hours each week I would have to spend studying and doing other course-related work. I then looked at my other responsibilities, including personal obligations and work-related obligations, and I used all of that information to determine how many hours per week I could devote to classes and homework.

As I was making these decisions, my counselors suggested I take two classes, though I ended up taking four. I definitely took their advice seriously, but I also thought that I had more time available each week than they realized. I can see now that the advice they gave me was very good, and that I should have followed it. While I did consider the amount of hours I would spend each week attending classes and doing homework, the difficulty of some of the courses meant that I had not allowed myself sufficient time to handle all of my classes. I certainly wish that I had taken the advice of my counselors, and if I am given another chance to attend this school I will certainly be much more open to taking good advice.

After doing some research and asking some questions, I can see that the school offers tutoring and other student-support services. If I am allowed to attend classes again, my first order of business will be to take on a courseload based on the advice of my counselors. My second action will be to make whatever arrangements are possible to find tutors for the classes I take. Instead of taking four classes, I can see that it would make more sense to take two classes, and dvote my extra time to meeting with tutors and focusing on the homework and other responsibilities of the two classes. In a sense, I am hoping to be granted the chance to undo the mistakes I made this past summer semester, and to take advantage of advice from my counselors as well as tutoring and other support services.

The level of academic performance I reached this past summer does not reflect the level I know I can reach. I made some serious errors and some bad decisions, but I now see how I could have done things differently. If I was unsure that I could do better, I would not be asking for another opportunity.  I am confident, however, that I can meet or exceed the 2/7 GPA mark if I simply take a reasonable number of classes, devote more time to those classes, and seek the help of UMKC tutors. I hope you will reconsider my eligibility and allow me one more chance to demonstrate that I can meet the challenges ahead.
