Boosting the Outlook for Nursing Informatics, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 314

Essay

While information systems are currently being used to contribute to the advanced nursing practice, it is necessary to consider that this technology will evolve over time to better suit patient care. Many professionals argue the need to further optimize HIT systems and to organize physical labor in a manner that better promotes the use of information systems (Pizzi, 2014). Even with the existing technology, it is important to determine ways to improve the human component of practice because many professionals still need to adapt to the use of this technology in practice. Therefore, training programs will likely evolve in a manner that incorporates this knowledge in addition to new cutting edge technology in education programs.

Starting in this year, all Medicare providers will be required to implement electronic health record systems, indicating that a larger percentage of health care providers will become aware of the basics of technology use in the health care setting (Sentinel, 2012). This is an important understanding because it implies that technology improvements will become more standard in the future and the government may amend its information technology legislation to ensure that health care providers remain up to date on quality of care and privacy issues. While it is challenging to predict the exact changes that will be made to information systems in the future, it can be assumed that their use will become increasingly more important as time continues. The use of patient data is our key to understanding patients on an individual and population level and changes will be made to make these observations easier to detect. Contributing to an understanding of patient care needs will improve practice and it is likely that technology improvements will be equipped to handle these issues more readily.
