Bring Courtesy Back to the Workplace, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 375

Essay

This article mainly outlines and describes some of the strategies and procedures for promoting respect and other standard behaviors in the workplace. According to Ron Ashkenas who is the author of the article, it is true that showing respect to all individuals in the workplace is one of the standard behaviors that should be practiced by all companies globally (Ashkenas 39).  The author also argued that majority of current university students are less empathetic when compared with the past generation university students.  This can be attributed to the common use of digital and online communication practices among the current university students.  Recent studies from University of Michigan and University of Duke also indicates that students are currently not making new friends due to lack of personal connections and face-to-face interactions.

Furthermore, many managers are currently displaying a lack of respect and courtesy in the workplace thus leading to high-stress levels to employees in the workplace. It is also common to find managers ignoring employee emails and voice mails, and this increases workplace problems in many companies globally. Therefore, according to Ron Ashkenas managers should develop effective strategies that will promote courtesy and respect in the workplace including working together as a team with employees and adopting effective and proper communication systems.  This will also include talking to various individuals in the firm about the standard behaviors to be upheld by everyone in the company. Ron Ashkenas also posits that managers should have an open dialogue with their teams in order to promote respect and courtesy in the workplace (Ashkenas 39).  This will also discourage the occurrence of bad behaviors in the workplace thus leading to high levels of respect and courtesy in the workplace.

In addition, according Peter Bregman one of the ways of working with individuals you do not like is to use those people to understand yourself better. This can allow managers, leaders, as well as employees to adopt good personalities and behaviors in the workplace by avoiding the traits they do not like from others in the workplace. In that sense, it is evident from Peter Bregman explanations that for one to be compassionate with others he must also be compassionate with himself.
