Computer Networking

After proposing a CAT 5 cable that support 100 megabits/sec as well as 1 Gigabit/sec me full duplex mode, there is a requirement of proposing a network topology. Likewise, the network topology will set the foundation of digital communications within and through the Wide Area Network, as the company also requires Virtual Private Network connectivity. We would recommend star network technology, as it comprehensively supports client/server architecture that is required for file sharing and Virtual Private Network connectivity as well. Moreover, the star topology also provides low cost of ownership for network administration, as it provides all functions and configurations on a server. The network administrator requires only one server access for changing configurations and settings.

Moreover, after selecting the topology, we will recommend to purchase Windows Server 2008, as it will support all features for file sharing and Virtual Private Network connectivity. (McCown, 2008) Windows Server will richly support Ocper Inc. for meeting all the current requirements and meet future network expansion requirements as well. Likewise, the server code installation will eliminate the long installation process of featured package operating system and only modules can be installed such as DHCP, DNS etc. for limited functionality. Moreover, it provides improved Internet Information Services with enhanced security and low administration overhead. Furthermore, Distributed File System supports that will allow file sharing on the entire network of Ocper Inc. and support for Remote authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS) Server (Slone, 1999). Windows Server 2008 is fully compatible with RADIUS server.

File Sharing for Ocper Inc. will be configured on Windows server 2008 and storage device can be assigned from any source. For instance, the storage can be the same hard drive that contains Windows server 2008 and it can be any other hard drive that is assigned as a storage medium. If storage space is not required, then there is no need for configuring a storage device. The distributed file service will provide meaningful uniform resource locators such as SOP repository instead of //documents/SOP/IT/IT SOP Repository. The DFS implementation will facilitate daily file sharing activities.

For Remote authentication Dial In User Service, the configurations will be made on the Windows 2008 server. (Books & Wikipedia, 2010) As per network dictionary, “Remote Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS) is a protocol for carrying authentication, authorization and con?guration information between a Network Access Server which desires to authenticate its links and a shared Authentication Server. RADIUS uses UDP as the transport protocol. RADIUS also carries accounting information between a Network Access Server and a shared Accounting Server”. Similarly, the remote authentication dial in user service security protocol is a “de facto standard protocol for authentication servers” (Remote Authentication Dial In User Service Security. 2007). As we have already proposed star topology, security information is stored by RADIUS server. For the employees of Ocper Inc., authorized connectivity for three different locations will be established by RADIUS server. Following are the benefits that will be achieved by Ocper Inc.:

Secure data of Ocper Inc. will be transmitted via different network devices to the three different locations. The role of the RADIUS server will be to gain all the secure data and manage it one a single location, as defined by the network administrator. As a result, this will mitigate risks of unauthorized access to data. Moreover, RADIUS can be integrated with Ocper Inc.  business requirements and its compatibility with Microsoft will make the integration easy, as network administrator will revise the text file in order to update new user details in the database.
