Bunker Roy, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 255

Essay

Empowering the poor, this was the primary aim of Bunker Roy when he first founded the Barefoot College Movement. In his mind, it is essential to establish a sustainable community as small communities that could sustain themselves are likely to be able to sustain the nation’s need for developmental groundwork. Considerably, his thoughts are strongly invoked by his desire to help and make sure that the people in the rural areas of India would be able to sustain their own living through utilizing the resources available at their reach with full concern as to how to conserve whatever nature provides then with.

Keynesian economists might not fully support this movement as it tends to set the rural areas apart from the main circulation of the economy. Giving the people a chance to establish a sustainable economy within their own communities, they would need less help from the central government especially when it comes to determining their place in the hope of creating a unified nation towards a unified understanding of economic values and the role that every household plays in the cycle.

Contrary to such thinking though, the Barefoot College empowers the society more than it deters its capacity to develop further. The organization and its cause for existence affects the lives of those who may have long been considered by the government as ‘out of the economic cycle’. Through the empowerment that the Barefoot College gives, the people gain competence and confidence again, equipping them with the knowledge and skills that are strongly necessary for survival.
