When we state that we value diversity in the workplace it means that people focus on the differences and similarities that they bring to the organization. Having workers with diverse work backgrounds, gender mix, age differences etc promotes a more balanced and well rounded culture in the workplace. Multi-culturalism in the workplace has presented diversity challenges for example : ” A Chinese man who finds himself in the employment of an organization in France may or may not be able to adapt himself to the use of French, just as a fresh graduate may have difficulties understanding a veteran in any given organization” (Mah, 2010). Organizations tend to run into difficulty when they allow bigotry, discrimination or stereotyping to be introduced into the organization. This can represent a considerable cultural barrier to overcome ” Discrimination. When diversity is not accepted in an organization, much of the time this is due to varying levels and kind of discrimination. Some types of discrimination which exist are gender, race, sexuality, religion, disability, economic class or cultural background.” (Goessl, 2010)
A company entering a diversity program would look at getting people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, providing an environment that is receptive to exploitation of integrative ideas, is friendly and representative of both male and females in different age groups. The Organization has to be equitable and motivational.
Companies have needed to become much more engaged and visionary with regards to organizing a diversity plan. Shifting demographics, cultural changes and more professional women entering business ” For a growing number of advanced organisations the approach to equal opportunities and diversity, as with many other areas of business operation, has moved from simple compliance to the creation of business differentiation.” (Access to Excellence, 2010)
Strategic goals and objectives relate to that of Organizational strategic planning and are more visionery, high level and holistic by nature. Operational Goals are far more tangible and measurable and can be quantified in terms of output and delivery. It is the latter which are normally associated as the implementation criteria for the strategic goals.
A supervisor will work with employees to achieve organizational goals and policies and ensure performance aligns with organizational goals and objectives ” the supervisor is the first person to tell employees about new policies and programs from management. It’s not uncommon that employees are confused or frustrated by these new actions, and need further clarification and support from supervisors. In the rapidly changing world of today’s organizations, it can be a major challenge to present new programs to employees without their being frustrated or even cynical. The supervisor must be authentic, yet tactful.” (Carter McNamara, 2010).
The difficulty in organising a work structure in the dynamic conditions of 2010 is mainly due to the fact that static planning is virtually impossible. There are so many variables and continuing movements that it becomes difficult to predict outcomes in the future. As such contingency factors have to be built into the planning process and these are usually based upon +/- %’s based upon how environmental conditions might change positively or adversely.
