Campus Rape Prevention, Essay Example

Campus rape is one of the most disturbing crimes of the present day. This is due to the fact that campus rapists do not even think that they did something wrong.  If everyone else is doing it, it must be right. It is a form of silent persuasion that is giving offenders the courage to commit crimes.[1] It has somewhat became a norm for college campuses and universities. This is the same dilemma that Laura Starecheski wrote on her article.[2] Students and educators have accepted the fact that using alcohol to intoxicate a potential victim and rape her is the reality that the society will just have to deal with once the crime is committed. But it should not be that way. It should be prevented and not wait for someone to be raped. However, when these teenagers are in a party and having the time of their lives, they lose awareness of what is happening around them. They just go with the flow without even noticing that a crime has already been committed. When the stakes are pleasure, peer pressure and social reputation, morals are being tossed out of the window without thinking of the possible consequences to self and other people. Morality is one of the pillars of the freedom we have now.[3] Yet, the activities of humanity defy any form of morality. It is the sad reality of life. More and more people are getting the courage to do the wrong things rather than act in accordance to what this country stands for: freedom and morality. There is no self-preservation and respect for life anymore. People are letting alcohol and drugs to rule them rather than respect for human beings.
