Carrying Out Nursing Responsibilities, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 303

Essay

It is important for this incident to be reported despite the fact that it did not cause an immediate health concern because it is possible that this error can compromise the patient’s health in the future. For example, failing to chart the insulin dose could impact a later dose, and providing the patient with extra insulin later in the day is not in accordance with the patient’s treatment recommendation. Therefore, a failure to report the incident would be a direct violation of beneficence, because this is not the best decision with regards to the patient’s welfare.

Furthermore, it is evident that Jill repeatedly makes errors since she is on probation. It is possible that the types of errors that she has made in the past were damaging to the patient, and it is therefore important to let a supervisor know that she has made an error once again. It is important for nurses to act professionally and in accordance with medical and ethical standards. Jill’s carelessness therefore should be reported, and it is likely that she is deserving of whatever retribution for her actions that she is delivered. Nurses are required to uphold stringent patient care standards, and it is clear that Jill has failed to deliver these standards for a second time.

It is my responsibility to be the whistleblower, because otherwise, no one could be aware of the mistake that was made. Therefore, if a problem occurs as a consequence, no one will be able to understand how to rectify this issue. Thus, it is important for this issue to be reported to the supervisor, even if it gets Jill in trouble. Each nurse must be accountable for his or her own mistakes in addition to those that they are made aware of.
