Essay

In our day to day lives we engage ourselves in activities that when repeated consecutively are known as habits. If negative, they could be considered as bad habits which are behaviors that people engage themselves in, in order to satisfy their daily livelihood even though they are aware of the resulting consequences. Some common habits are excessive food consumption, drugs and substance abuse, biting nails, chewing objects, among others. The most common and dangerous type of abuse in the society is drug abuse. This is a habit that affects many young people, because once in the system, it’s not easy to quit.

I once had a friend who loved taking alcohol so much that he could visit spooky places just to get it. I got anxious one time and wanted to know what was happening inside the small huts in the slums where my friend frequently visited. They gave me a spoon and a matchbox and an attempt to decline resulted to them calling me a coward. That’s when I went ahead and sniffed once, a few more times and before I knew it, I had become an addict. It felt like a solution to most of my problems such that whenever I felt that I needed to relieve stress, my first stop was in the slums. At times I used to believe that I would gather courage when I am on the influence of the drug and most of the times I engaged myself in fights that left me scarred. I was no longer looking for employment because alcohol was preoccupying most of my time.

My friend later became very ill and skinny. He tested positive in a HIV/AIDS and claimed to have never slept with any girl. It was later discovered that he must have acquired it from sharing needles while taking drugs. I had abandoned the habit before I started taking drugs that are injected and was becoming a Christian after I encountered a friend being beaten to death for stealing as he wanted to get money for the drugs. I also joined a peer counseling group where I came across a lady who had lost her baby from the addiction and she even became barren afterwards. I later came to discover that drugs reduces ones thinking capacity, interferes with the central nervous system and one could even become insane.
