Essay

Abstract

The subject of this report is a floorplan.  The floorplan is for a home that was designed in the 1950s.  The home is composed of a standard layout.  The new family wants to redesign the kitchen.  The proposal is an emphasis of less formal dining and more space for family activities.  Smart Draw was applied for the design of the floor plan.  The new floor plan uses bay windows and a spiral staircase in order to optimize the space in the home.  The perspectives of Beacon Lighting (2015) and Miller (2014) were used in the composition of the floorplan.

Floorplan

The 1950 standard layout was redesigned using bay windows and ceiling fans. The living room is to the right of the entrance.  The study is to the left of the entrance.  The laundry room is adjacent to the kitchen.  There is a bay window and sliding door that were used in the kitchen.  Ceiling fans were applied in order to maximize the heat transfer of the fireplace.  There is a bathroom and which contains a shower and a bidet.  The use of sliding doors and pocket doors was applied in the floorplan.  The original dimensions of the home which were 29’ 6” x 28’ 0” were maintained.  Bay windows were applied in order to maximize the use of light and space (Beacon Lighting, 2015; Miller, 2014).

Bay Windows

The implementation of bay windows can be a blessing.  The application of the bay window originates in the medieval era.  The bay windows were popularized in England in the Victorian era architecture.  In the United States, the bay windows became fashionable in the late nineteenth century in California. Residences in San Francisco apply bay windows as an architectural element (Miller, 2014).

The additional floor area and the light causes the bay windows to become a quality that is attractive to home owners.  The bay windows have the characteristic of adding value to the home.  The windowsills of the bay windows can be raised in order to add space for plants and decorations.  Furthermore, the bay windows are ideal places to position desks.  The bay windows can be adapted to extend from the floor to the ceiling (Miller, 2014).

In settings which are suburban, the floor to ceiling bay windows have the quality of extending the living space into the garden and the front year.  Consultation with an engineer would be required prior to removing parts of the walls.  The bay windows add depth to the rooms and increase the quality of lighting.  The attribute of the bay windows is that the ventilation in the home is increased while increasing the light.  Storage spaces can be built into the areas between the bay windows and the floors in order to maximize space (Miller, 2014).

Ceiling Fans

It is very easy to save energy with a ceiling fan.  The majority of ceiling fans consume as much electricity as a sixty watt incandescent bulb.  The cost of feeling cool in the summer is $0.02 per hour.  In the summer, the ceiling fans operating in conjunction with the air conditioning system has the potential of reducing the lighting bill by 40%.  In the winter, applying the ceiling fan in the reverse function has the capacity of decreasing the home heating costs by 10%.  The ceiling fans have the capacity of being operated by remote control (Beacon lighting, 2015).

Conclusion

The residence was modernized by the application of bay windows, ceiling fans, pocket doors and sliding doors.  These implementations were applied in order to optimize the use of light and space in the residence.  The original dimensions of the home were maintained.  The application of the bay windows provides the perception that the living space in the home has been increased.  The ceiling fans are an energy saving implementation that save energy in the winter and summer months.
