Introduction

The ability of cells to adapt to a variety of conditions requires an understanding of the factors that facilitate this process and enable them to remain living and to overcome different types of deficits. Most notably, cell injury is a complex phenomenon that influences how cells respond to different types of change and in determining what is required to minimize cell damage as much as possible (Kahn & Solomon, 2007). Cells are able to adapt in many ways to different factors, including but not limited to stress; therefore, these issues must be considered in the context of managing the response to cellular stress that may occur and to determine what is required to overcome these obstacles effectively and minimize cell damage that may be lasting and permanent (Kahn & Solomon, 2007).

Analysis

Cells respond to environmental stress in different ways and either hyperfunction by increasing in size, or hypofunction by decreasing the level of production or not growing to their full size, potential, and functionality, thereby leading to atrophy and other challenges (Kahn & Solomon, 2007). Under these conditions, cells will respond in different ways, but they are also able to adapt and to utilize routine physiological processes to retain a normal and steady state in different ways (Kahn & Solomon, 2007). Factors such as heat shock proteins may be effective in supporting an environment where stress is managed by these proteins and enables cells to recover more quickly and more effectively, as these proteins support cellular recovery and an improved response to stress (Kahn & Solomon, 2007). In addition, other factors must be considered, such as metaplasia, which is a method of managing change effectively within cells (Kahn & Solomon, 2007). In each of these examples, cells will respond differently and may sustain different types of damage more effectively than in other cases; therefore, factors such as injury must also be considered as part of this process and in encouraging a framework whereby cell recovery may occur (Kahn & Solomon, 2007). Some cell damage is permanent and may cause death and is initiated through different biochemical responses, such as protein kinesis, the reduction of ATP to provide energy for cellular functionality, and the development of free radicals from oxygen, among others (Kahn & Solomon, 2007). In cases where cell damage or injury are evident, this is largely a result of lesions that influence cell function, some of which may be reversible, such as swelling, atrophy, and metaplasia, while others are irreversible, such as necrosis and apoptosis (Danciu, Mihailovici, Dima, & Cucu, 2014). These conditions require an examination of the different areas where cell damage may occur and the ability to better understand the dynamics of cell adaptation and what is required to prevent cell death from taking place (Danciu et.al, 2014). The factors related to cell adaptation are frequent, and the ability to respond successfully to prevent cell death requires an understanding of what is required to minimize cell damage and what may trigger a more serious cellular response, such as injury or disease (Danciu et.al, 2014). These considerations must represent an opportunity to examine the different constructs of care and treatment for patients and to recognize the basic fundamentals of cell adaptation that are favorable versus those that contribute to cell damage and death.

Conclusion

Cell adaptation is a complex condition that is characterized by a number of different factors; therefore, it is necessary to develop an understanding of this process and to determine what is required to ensure that cells are protected from risk, damage, and death as much as possible. There must be a greater emphasis on the development of new methods to accommodate cell adaptation and to recognize the inherent processes that occur within cells which enable their adaptation to move forward in the context of preventing long-term damage and cell death.
