According to the Education Portal website it is recommended to have a minimal of an associate’s degree  in accounting for an individual’s education to be beneficial to the Certified Bookkeeper position, however a high school diploma and experience may compensate.  Many schools of higher education offer a certificate in bookkeeping in addition to the regular accounting curriculum (Bookkeeping Education 1).

To become a Certified Bookkeeper one must be certified by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB). The AIPB requires two years bookkeeping experience in addition to the educational  background.  Applicants must pass a 4 part examination and adhere to a code of ethics. It is important to maintain integrity and transparency when handling financial documents for any company. Once the examination is passed successfully the AIPB will award the Certified Bookkeeper credential which is valid for three years.  Recertification of the credential involves continuing education hours to be completed either online or in class (Bookkeeping Education 1).

The US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics currently reports that the median wage for a Certified Bookkeeper and similar positions is roughly around $35,170.00 per year as of May 2012.  In addition the future employment outlook for this position is expected to increase 11% from 2012 to 2022, which is about average nationwide for all occupations (Bureau of Labor Statistics 1).
