Essay

Written herein is a suppose diary of the wife of the Charchan Man of the Urumchi Mummies. This five-day diary can be accounted to the last five days of her sewing and preparation before the strong winds brought by the desert sands washed them off and buried them.

This is my daily tasks on how I am preparing the blankets for my child and my husband. I am trying to complete the blankets and belt before our burial. This is because there is high-speed wind, which is changing day by day. I am fighting to make sure that I will complete we put on as soon as possible. I am not sure if will complete but I am praying hard that I complete before we are swept by the wind. This because the wind is unpredictable and it can come when I have not completed. I will rejoice if will complete before the wind sweep on us.

Day 1

This is always any other day for me. Every day is simply a time of the strings, a moment that I always take a particular role in life. I was able to sew some parts of the blanket already, but there are still more trinket to attached. Among all other things that I should do, the placing of these ornaments have to be set as a priority.

I cannot deny that there are moments in my life that I asked why should this be so? Why set the trinket as a priority? Why do not I just join my husband in placing food in the table by gathering just as the other tribes would do?

With all these why’s, there always come the revelation of our purpose, my purpose as a woman in this tribe. Among all other things there are in life, I am a wife who is tasked to provide the best of both worlds as my husband dies. I am a mother who is tasked to provide clean and safe preservation of my child’s body and prevent it from decomposing. I am woman whose legacy on this Earth is not to allow my family to leave no trace to this earth and become just a dust in the wind like the sands of these warm deserts. Above all, I am a woman who has the richness of these textiles and has the capabilities to sew all trinkets in the already sewn clothes that are packed and prepared.

Day 2

Day 2 means the same other day as yesterday, I continue with my preparation for our burial before the high winds sweep us. This day I am now on the other part of the blanket to be finished with the trinket. I showed the unfinished blanket to my husband and he liked it. He said that he envies our child because he can wear the better blanket. I told him that I am making something special for him too. This made him smile.

The winds are getting stronger day by day. This worries me because I may not be able to finish all the blankets for them and that I may have the very least preparations for our burial.  As we are living in the basin, the high winds might sweep us before I finish the robe and blanket. My husband will wear the robe in our burial and the blanket is for our child wear as he prepare for the burial. I still pray to the gods, though, that the winds be light and that they may give me the time to prepare for the baby’s blanket and my husband’s robe.

I opened up my worries to my husband, and we share the same anxiety. He said that the gods are merciful that they can allow us to be prepared for the next travel of our lives. He told me that he will still try to search for more water and some food until I get to finish the robes and blanket. I asked him to study the skies again so he can measure again. He promised to do, and in some ways, this has made me less worried.

I promised myself to work extra hard by concentrate on finishing the blanket’s ornaments. It has to be perfect and no perfection can be attained unless I let myself to be free from the anxieties of the heart and mind. I also promised my husband with the same thing and he told me that he would try to do the same thing too.

Day 3

The blanket will soon be finished and that everything would be placed in order for the baby. I am now down to the last line and I would want to be done by the end of this day. Early on, I prepared food for my husband and he is glad to know that I am almost done. I told him that with this last line, I can then prepare for his robe and he might perhaps try it by the end of this day as well.

By noon, I am already done with the blanket and I tried to fit it to my boy. It suits him well and my son can indeed look as pretty and ready for the next travel. I think that the boy is lucky enough to have lived prosperous up till now. He can no longer take the road that we went through: that hot, stormy and painful travel before we got to this Basin. The boy would suit well for the travel when he gets and he can thank me later on with his blanket.

I then immediately started with the robe that I can sew for my husband. By doing this, I started to cut out the textiles using the scraper. I then estimated the length according to my husband’s height using my arms. He was a tall man, that there is a need to stitch an additional cloth to the arms so the hands can be covered. I think I can make something for his hand but I do not seem to get the design for it, which is why the only solution I can think of is to make the arms of the robe longer.

As the day ends today, the bone needle is still attached to the arm extension and I will still wait for the next day light to finish the robe.

Day 4

On this day the high winds were getting worse but I was happy as I had completed the blankets. There is nothing much more for me to do for the blankets as of now. I must work with ephedra plants and try to make the best perfect robe for my husband. In this fourth day, I tried the blanket with my son again. Before my husband went away for hunting, I showed to him the blanket and he is glad to see that it suits perfectly well. The baby is beginning to be paler than ever and it would seem that the blanket makes him cry a little less. I am happy to see that the blanket is making him comfortable enough.

Back to the ephedra plants, I intend to dye the robe with these plants. The texture of this textile does not seem convincing that it needs something that can make it intact. The ephedra plants are known for its preservation qualities. The dyes that it can make to the cloth will certainly allow the cloth to be more durable even for centuries.

My husband came early from hunting today and he is glad to see me preparing the dye of the ephedra plants. He told me that this is what makes the robe special. I told him yes and it should perfectly suit him and protect him. In addition, I had prepared a robe and I had ten hats of different make ups. This is because I had prepared the robe and blanket for my husband and I decided to prepare the hats for myself. He volunteered to continue the dying and ask me to wear my robe. I told him that we can wear it together. He told me that he wanted to see it before he closes his eyes tonight. I smiled and obeyed what he wanted. I entered the hut and started to wear the robe that I intend to wear tomorrow night. Now I can rejoice as I have completed the blankets, hats, and the belts.
