Pages: 1

Words: 288

Essay

Broadly defined, charisma is the charm and appeal that an individual exudes. While a manager does not need charisma to be successful, it is a helpful personality trait that could be used to motivate employees and encourage them to perform well. Many people are born with this personality trait, although in some instances, it could be learned. Learning important leadership traits such as charisma can be acquired through practice and some leadership training programs boast that they are able to instill this characteristic in their attendees.

To learn how to be charismatic, it is essential to observe individuals that have display this characteristic. Typically, these individuals are lively and are outgoing. Furthermore, they are able to talk to individuals in a manner that appeals to them. Above all, charismatic leaders lead by example and correct mistakes through constructive criticism. It is possible for even introverted individuals to acquire these qualities over time, which will enable them to become more comfortable with this practice.

While charisma is a personality trait that can be learned, only a select few individuals are able to do so. Despite this, individuals in leadership positions should attempt to do so because the best leaders are charismatic. The relationship between charisma and effective leadership is typically related to the leadership style that these individuals adopt. While some leaders prefer leading by command and punishment, negative reinforcement does not result in productive employees. Therefore, if a manager wishes to increase the productivity of his or her company, it is useful to adopt a charismatic persona, even if this trait is faked, during the workday. If managers are unable to be charismatic, it would be useful to attempt to adopt related qualities and incorporate them into their management practices.
