Chasing Zero: Discussion Response, Essay Example

Essay

Part 1

How “Chasing Zero” the documentary made you feel as a young professional entering the healthcare profession?

I have personally realized the importance of providing competent service to the patients. Viewing my position as a mere ‘job description’ that is linked to my name would not help in the hope of creating a patient-centered personal culture. I was then able to see how important is my role for the people that I am about to help. In relation to this, I realized that the importance of applying proper and safe medical practice needs to be carried on all the time as all these aspects of operation could save or cause another life.

Find a journal article that relates to the situations or overall concerns of quality patient care and about how to avoid or reduce errors in the healthcare setting?

Denham’s (2013) research article on Safe Use of Electronic Health Records and Health Information Technology System provides a distinct indication on how modern technology could actually impact the concept of increasing quality patient care especially in reducing inaccurate medical services given to patients due to misinformation causing malpractice on the part of the medical staffs.

When you first heard Dennis Quaid’s story what did you think and feel?

As a person, I felt the dismay that Mr. Quaid had towards the people who attended to his twins. Considering their small bodies and weak systems experiencing such pressure from wrong medication, I too would feel as much worried as Mr. Quaid was if I was to take his position as the father of newly born twins. Relatively, as a healthcare provider, I feel that somehow, Mr. Quaid’s experience is somewhat a source of a wakeup call, a matter that should bring my attention to how I understand proper medical attitude in relation to how I handle my responsibility towards the people hoping to be medically assisted under my care.

How did the other participant’s story impact you?

Braxton Rel’s story and that of his parents’ specifically spoke to me. It featured how the patients’ loved ones reacted to the situation; how they felt in the end in relation to how they thought their loved one was treated by the medical experts. Giving them the care and the attention they need, serving them in the most accurate way possible and allowing them to realize that they can recover from the situation are three elements that should have made it easier for the parents of Braxton to feel more secure and practically helped by those whom they expected assistance from.

Part 2

What factors should the nurse consider when prioritizing a patient assignment?

It is important that a nurse assigned to a specific patient know the health record of the individual page-by-page. This means that the nurse should know the details specifically addressing the needs and medical limitations and issues of the patient she is attending to. Considerably, it is expected that every assigned nurse keep track of the records of recovery that the patient she attends to is making in each day. Remarkable and notable instances should be reported immediately especially if the nurse feels that the situation calls for a distinct attention from a higher medical provider among the staff members of the hospital.

What tasks or care can be assigned or delegated to other personnel? (RN’s; LPN’s; CNA’s)?

Regular recording of patient progress could be assigned to other personnel included within a particular medical organization. These tasks are usually common and are considered protocol conditions related to the work and operations undergone by nurses. It should be noted though that carrying out such tasks are vital to the recovery and medical development of each patient involved.

What is the difference between delegation and assignment?

Delegation involves more specific tasks compared to an assignment which usually involves regular conditions of work that are usually connected to the usual culture of the organization especially in relation to dealing with patient-centered services.

How does the nurse manager, a peer or manager who practices outside the scope of practice breach standards of practice?

The passing of vital information about a specific patient is a vital element that helps in lowering healthcare harm. Any particular healthcare worker who practices outside the scope of a specific institution could be held liable for breach of standards of practice if such information is not passed on accurately causing particular medical anomalies to the patients involved.
